Servopac Angle Calibrator User Manual

1. INTRODUCTION

The Servopac Angle Calibrator allows the user to verify the angle of gyration by measuring the
vertical displacement component of the mould carrier gyration. It utilises a standard digital dial
gauge held in a jig comprising of a stable base and support arm.

Prior to performing the verification procedure, please familiarise yourself with the equipment by
reading the Servopac User Manual, and the Servopac Monitor Software User Manual.

Warning: During the power on process, the Servopac mould carrier’s movement may be
sufficient to damage the angle calibrator assembly. Ensure the angle calibrator is
not in position when the Servopac is powered on or off. For the same reason, do
not attempt to lift the access door during the verification process. The safety
interlocks will trigger an immediate Emergency Stop.

2. PROCEDURE

• Fit the dial gauge to the calibrator base assembly. The gauge sits all the way down on the arm.

• Ensure the Servopac is powered on and the mould carrier is in “Home” position; where the
base pedestal is raised, the mould carrier is level with the extractor top plate, and the access
door is open.

• Remove the base pedestal using the lifting handle (supplied with the Servopac).

• Ensure the area underneath the base pedestal is clean and free from foreign material.

Note: Take care not to disturb the base pedestal height adjusting bolt (in the end of the
actuator shaft) during the verification process.

• Place the calibrator base over the shaft for the base pedestal lift actuator such that the dial
gauge can be easily read from the front of the unit.

• On the PC Monitor software, set the Vertical stress to 10kPa, the Rate (number of gyrations
per minute) to 3 and the (Sample) Height termination to 50mm. Set the gyratory angle to the
required value.

• Lower the mould.

• Lock the mould.

• Zero the dial gauge.

• Start the Servopac.

NOTE: The vertical loading ram will now lower onto the angle calibrator assembly.

• While the mould carrier is gyrating, note the maximum and minimum readings on the dial
gauge (approximately every 10 seconds).

• Stop the machine when the appropriate number of measurements have been recorded.

NOTE: It will take about 5 gyrations for the Servopac to converge on the requested angle.

• Remove the angle calibrator assembly, and replace the base pedestal.

• Calculate the gyratory angle (θ) using the following formula:

 max + min 
θ o =  

 4 

where max = maximum dial gauge reading

min = minimum dial gauge reading
4 = a constant (based on the dimensions of the jig.

eg: Maximum dial gauge reading: 2.61mm

Minimum dial gauge reading: -2.47mm
then:

 2.61 + − 2.47 
θ o =  

 4 

 5.08 
θo =  = 1.27
