REVIEW OF EPROM

• Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory
(EPROM)
• The term "EPROM" is the acronym for
"Erasable Programmable Read-only Memory".
It is a semiconductor memory device that can
be programmed with data which can only be
read, but not altered, by the application circuit
An EPROM is a non-volatile memory device.
It can retain its stored data even if it is powered off

• Reprogramming an EPROM with new data is

possible, but it has to undergo a special data
erasure process that employs ultraviolet (uv)
light before it can be done. There are some
EPROMs , known as one-time programmable
(OTP) EPROMs, that are designed to be non-
reprogrammable as a cheaper alternative for
storing specific bug-free data that never
require any change.
OVERVIEW OFMICROPROCESSORS
WHAT IS A MICROCOMPUTER?

• To an engineer who is familiar with mainframe

and mini computers, a microcomputer is
simply a less powerful mini computer.
Microcomputers have smaller instruction sets
and are slower than mini computers, but then
they are far less expensive and smaller too.
WHAT IS A MICROPROCESSOR?
A computer, large or small, can be represented functionally (in a simplified form) by the block diagram in
Figure. 1.1. As shown, it comprises of three basic parts or sub-systems
MICROCONTROLLER
Basics of Microcontrollers

• Microcontroller is a single chip micro

computer made through VLSI fabrication. A
microcontroller also called an embedded
controller because the microcontroller and its
support circuits are often built into, or
embedded in, the devices they control.
• 1) A microcontroller basically contains one or more following
components:

• Central processing unit(CPU)

• Random Access Memory)(RAM)
• Read Only Memory(ROM)
• Input/output ports
• Timers and Counters
• Interrupt Controls
• Analog to digital converters
• Digital analog converters
• Serial interfacing ports
• Oscillatory circuits
