1 GENERAL
1.1 Scope
1.1.1 This specification provides the supplementary technical requirements for gaskets in the
DESCRIPTION shown on the Bill of Materials of Requisition for ERC REFINERY PROJECT.
1.1.2 If the DESCRIPTION differs from, or is in conflict with, any requirement of this specification, it
shall be resolved in the following order of precedence.
Design, fabrication, testing and inspection of piping materials shall be accomplished in accordance with
Appendix #1 “CODES AND STANDARDS”
1.3 Abbreviations
Full description for Abbreviaion shown on DESCRIPTION in Bill of Materials shall be refered to
Appendix #2 “ABBREVIATIONS”
1.4 Unit
Unless otherwise specified, Metric, Celsius and Kilogram units shall be applied as the measurement
system. However nominal sizes and pressure rating of piping components shall be in accordance with
inch system whose abbreviations is (NPS) and (Lb) respectively.
2.1 Material
2.1.1 Asbestos shall not be used for any type of gasket materials.
2.1.2 For spiral wound gaskets, the outer ring shall be metal plated, unless otherwise specified, to avoid
atmospheric corrosion.
2.1.4 Metal ring-joint gaskets shall have to follwing maximum brinell hardness
- Soft Iron : 90
- Alloy steel : 130
- Stainless Steel : 135
- 9Cr-1Mo Steel : 160

2.2 Dimensions
2.2.1 Spiral wound gaskets shall be designed so that a uniform bolt stress of 30,000 psi will compress
the gasket to a thickness of 3.30 mm 0.13.
2.2.2 Unless otherwise specified, all dimensions and relevant requirements for flange shall be in
accordance with the following.
2.2.3 Standard for gasket dimensions and relevant requirements shall be as follows;
(1) Metallic Gaskets (Ring-Joint, Spiral Wound and Jacketed) : ASME B16.20
(2) Non-Metallic Flat Gasket : ASME B16.21
3.1 Flange insulation gasket set (Flange Insulation Kit) shall be installed at all under-ground to above-grade
piping connections where cathodic protection is required. Where specified with “FOR INSULATION
KIT W/SLEEVE & WASHER” in gasket description, the follwing items shall be supplied by gasket
manufacturer.
3.2 Flange Insulation Kit shall consist of the following parts as shown in Fig.-1;
- Insulating Gasket
- Insulating Bolt Sleeve
- Insulating Washer
- Steel Washer
3.3.1 Material of insulating gasket shall be 1/8” (3.2mm) phenolic per Fig. -1.
- For NPS 24 and smaller except NPS 22: ASME B16.21, Flat Ring Gasket for flange standard
ASME B16.5.

- For NPS 22 : ASME B16.21, Flat Ring Gasket for flange standard MSS SP-44.
- For NPS 26 and larger: ASME B16.21, Flat Ring Gasket for flange standard ASME B16.47
series A.
3.4.2 Material of insulating bolt sleeve shall be 1/32” (0.79mm) phenolic per Fig. -1.
3.5.1 Material of insulating washer shall be 1/8” (3.2mm) high strength phenolic per Fig. -1.
3.6.1 Hardened steel back-up 1/8” (3.2mm) thick washer shall be supplied with each insulating washer.
4.1.1 In additional to the marking required by the standard ASME B16.20, the following information
shall be marked by cold stamping on the centering ring of each spiral wound gasket ;
4.1.2 For non-metal sheet gaskets, a stainless steel metal tag on which all data is indicated shall be
attached to each package.
4.2.1 Spiral wound gaskets shall be color coded in accordance with ASME B16.20.
5.1 Inspection and tests may be reviewed and/or witnessed by Purchaser or its authorized agent at the
supplier's facility in accordance with with 7T04-QA-00-PC-003, Shop Inspection and Test Plan.
5.2 Where required, Positive material identification (PMI) shall be in accordance with 7T04-QA-00-PC-004,
PMI Procedure.
6 OTHERS
6.1 Any substitutions of specified rating or material shall not be permitted without PURCHASER’s written
approval.
6.2 All gaskets shall be properly protected and packed during transportation and shall be rust protected.
6.3 The supplier shall furnish manufacturer’s Mill Test Reports, including PURCHASER’s Purchase Order
Number and Item Code Number. The test reports shall be traceable to each gasket through legible paint
stenciled heat numbers or equivalent.

6.4 Austenitic stainless steel material shall be protected from exposure to salt water or salt spray during
shipment, cleaning, fabrication, testing and/or storage. If protective coatings are used they shall not
contain or other substances that may be detrimental to stainless steel.
6.5 The supplier shall specify both detail specifications and manufacturer’s model number for gasket during
quotation and vendor print approval.
