 Abstract
As a student of mechanical engineering I’ve learnt most of our work is in the field and
applied sort. And for this reason it was compulsory for me to have an industrial
experience during my studies of mechanical engineering. For that purpose I chose “Izhar
Steels private limited”. This company manufactures steel structures and buildings, one of
those being installed in our own university. So there was a lot to learn for mechanical
engineering in that sort of firm. It had some advanced manufacturing machines like CNC
gas cutting and Submerged Arc welding machine and many other that I’d mention in this
report. The company had a good disciplined hierarchy and was divided into different
departments ,all according to their work domain. I got to do internship in 4 different
departments.

4. Project management Team
We would look into each of these departments in this report.

 Introduction

This company was formed in 2005 to offer turnkey solution to pre-engineered steel
buildings and steel structures. The workshop is spread over an estimated covered area of
350,000 sq. ft approximately with an annual capacity of around 48,000 Megatons. The
head office of Izhar steel lies in Lahore.
Their main work is regarding Pre engineering Buildings and Steel structures. They also
make vessels ,containers of large size, tankers and even heat exchangers. While I was
working there, we had several different projects from some companies like DG cements,
PEL, Nippon Paints and CUST as well. So I got a good exposure to mechanical field out
in this industry. Here I’ll try to explain departmental structure of this company.

1. Marketing
This department brings in work from outside. They market their company and
bring in projects. Project proposals and inquiries are done at marketing
department. They look at the budget of the project and see whether it is feasible
for them to take this project. The marketing department is in direct contact with
the client up until the project is forwarded to Project management team.

2. Project management Team

As the name suggests , this department heads a project and manages it and see its
progress. The project management team is in direct contact with the client until
the project finally dispatches or is installed. The project management team gets the
basic design from client and a quotation. Quotation consists of details like Area,
cost, tax ,sum expense etc. Project management team then gives project to Design
department.

3. Design
Design department works on different softwares to design a perfect structure
required by the client. Client can give his own project design as well and design
department then reviews that design and makes any changes if needed after
contacting with client. Design department consists of mechanical engineers and
drafters and metallurgical engineer as well.

4. Production
As the name suggests, it deals with all the production and fabrication of all
projects that come their way. The team generally consisted of mechanical
engineers. The supervisors were assigned for different tasks and their overlooked
all the work in progress. These engineers also looked after the efficiency of their
workers that if the required amount of work is being done by certain set of people
under them or not.

5. QA/QC
This department works all the way through when the project comes in, till it is
dispatched. Once the project is assigned, the material is brought in by store
department , the quality team is then asked to check if the material that arrived is
the one required. i.e they would check dimensions and material type. Then while
the fabrication is in place the quality team is asked to examine the product
simultaneously and the when the finishing of project is done, the QA/QC team
then gives it a final inspection before dispatching.
The QA/QC department also consists of safety supervisors. Their job is to ensure
that every work is done in a safe and sound environment.

6. Maintenance
This department works on maintaining the system of the site. It covers all
machines and other maintenance work.

7. Store
Store just keeps all the data of material and machinery available for projects. It
brings in material required and also provides labor with proper safety stuff. It
keeps track of how much material is used or to be used in project.

 Job Department’s description

My internship was diverse in a way that I got to work and get experience from 4
departments. 2 weeks in each. I will lay out the description of my work in each of these
departments in this chapter.

1. Production
In this department , I was working with three other mechanical engineers. On first
days they gave me basic info on what the department is about and what its work is.
The major part of their work consisted of understanding the 2-D drawings and
CAD models as generated by design department. They used to interpret them. This
was very relatable to me because in just the previous semester we were studying
CAD modeling in our Machine design course. This helped me understanding the
drawings in a more practical manner. As I could see the physical shape of
whatever design I saw as 2-D on a sheet.
This department looked after the fabrication of material. So a lot of work was out
in field. Which was helpful in developing some basic skills and to practice the
safety measures to be seen in a working place.

2. QA/AC
This department’s description is already given above. So my work was sort of the
same. I was assigned with different supervisors for inspection of different projects
going on in that time. At first we were to inspect the proper dimensions of
materials. It also helped me in reading off of a 2-D drawing. I was also put to
inspect the finishing of material. i.e to examine the DFT through an elcometer and
I was given proper info on how much DFT a certain coating shall have. It was a
new thing for me to learn.

 3. Design
The design department has to be most interesting I found to be. They were
working with different sofwares for most part which was exciting to learn. I learnt
a new software with the name of “PV elite”. Most of these softwares used basic
knowledge of what we study in university. The softwares used are as follow:
1. PV Elite
2. Tanks
3. TEKLA
4. Autodesk Autocad
5. TEMA codes ( for heat exchangers)
They also ran analysis on their project , running simulation before actually giving
project to production team. In my days, we got a project from PSO to make three
Storage Tanks and pipe connection system. The supervisor was kind enough to let
me know about it and giving me opportunity to learn more about field work.
4. Project Management Team

Summary and Recommendations

This internship provided me the opportunity to test my skills and knowledge in the field.
It was good to see how everything is managed under different disciplined departments
and the hierarchy of the system is respected around in the facility. To my advantage, the
staff was amazing and helpful in all departments. Everyone was experienced in their job
so I learn a good amount from them. From working with the supervisor of
layout/fabrication , CNC gas cutting machines, seeing all these different types of welding
and manufacturing processes really boosted my interest in this sort of industry. I see it
that it was very important for me to experience the industry in order to understand more
of domain of my educational qualification. To see how competitive it is for us engineers.
Overall , Izhar steel private limited provided me with best learning opportunities.
