CASE STUDY 1: One Electronics: I’ll Dream of you

I. Synopsis/Executive Summary

The purpose of this case study is to provide sound solution to Mr. Genota’s concern of choosing
the right course and university for his three sons. In order for him to make a wise decision, he would have
to research the internet and observe the needs of his busines. One issue that may arise is if his sons would
not agree on the course or university that he picked out for them. The theories related from the
coursework that may be applied to the problem are “The three General preconditions for achieving lasting
success as a manager according to Kreitner”; and other topics discussed in Chapter 1 and 2 of the book
“Engineering Management” by Roberto Medina. In this case study, it has been assumed that he has
enough funds to send his sons to a good college and to enroll them to an expensive course based on the
fact that he has a stable business.

II. Findings

Mr. Genota’s concern is where he would send his sons to college and the courses that they will
take. According to the case, he owns a store for parts that are used in assembly and maintenance of
computers and he wants to establish hos own assembly plant. Since his business is about electronics, it
would be better for him to send his first son to Electronics Engineering because this course would greatly
hep him in establishing and starting his own assembly plant and assign him as an Engineer Manager. An
Engineering Manager would be concerned with planning, organizing, leading and controlling an
organization’s resources to achieve its mission and objectives. For the second son, he could take up
Business Management in order to help him in the business aspect. Lastly, the third son could take up
Accounting so that he could be in charge of the Financial aspect of the business. And since their residency
is in Elias Angeles st., his sons can study in the University of Nueva Caceres. This university is known
for producing successful professionals and they are known as the first university in Naga City to offer
Engineering so it would be a good school for his sons.

III. Discussion

A major problem that may arise is if his sons does not want to take the courses, he wants for
them. According to Kreitner, there are three general preconditions for achieving lasting success as a
manager. His son already has the ability since he belongs to the top ten of his class and he also has the
opportunity. The only thing he might lack is the motivation to manage especially if he is forced to do

something he does not want to. If he is not motivated enough, he would not have the drive to make the
right decision for the business. And according to Delaney “managers who cannot or do not want to make
decisions are dangerous and should be removed from their position as soon as possible.” So, he would
have to know if his son is motivated enough with the help of John Miner’s psychometric instrument.

IV. Conclusion

The best courses for his sons to take are Electronics Engineering, Business Management, and
Accountancy. And they can study in University of Nueva Caceres. Although, the problem here is if his
sons would not agree on his decision.

V. Recommendations

The alternative solution that is the best for his sons and for his business would be for them to
have a meeting about the university and the courses that his sons are planning to have and if they would
really agree on his decision. It would not be beneficial for him as a parent and a business owner to have
employees who don’t put their full efforts and energy into their works because they are only forced to do
so.

VI. Implementation

Each of his sons should research the internet personally and make a list of their desired
universities and courses but they should still try to consider helping their father in the way that they can
while doing what they really like to do. Then, they should present it to their father and from there they can
have a discussion and compromise between meeting the business’ needs and by letting his sons be what
they want to be in the future.
