LT 4 : Quiz No.1 2 hrs.

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of Week 3, you should be able to:

1. Apply NSCP provisions to determine the safety provisions for columns subject to axial
compression.
2. Analyze and Design Structural Members for Axial Compression

Go to our LMS and Read the uploaded document (Axially loaded Compression Members)

Learning Task 2

For Flexi-tech students: ZOOM meeting #2 Class discussion

Let’s look for a good time to talk and discuss on date, using the following Zoom details

Learning Task 3

Go to our LMS and Answer Learning Activity No.3

Learning Activity No.3

 The W section is reinforced at top and bottom

flanges by a 250 mm wide by 16 mm thick plate is
used as a column with a length of 5.0 m. Determine
the safe axial load the column can carry using AISC
specifications with Fy = 345 MPa when:

a) Column ends are fixed

b) One end of the column is fixed; the hinged
c) Both ends are hinged

 A W12 x 79 is used as a column section with an unbraced length of 4.1m. Assume Kx = Ky

=1.0. Use Fy = 245 MPa, fc' = 28 MPa. The column is interfaced to a concrete pedestal. E =
200000 MPa.

Properties of W12 x 70
A = 14968 mm2 Sx = 1753 x 103 mm3
d = 314.45 mm Sy = 587 x 103 mm3
bf = 306.83 mm rx = 135.64 mm
tf = 18.69 mm ry = 77.47 mm
tx = 11.94 mm

a) Compute the max. Capacity of the column section.

b) Design the size of the column base plate.
c) Design the thickness of the base plate.
