0 CONCLUSION
Based on our researches above, there are few conclusions that can be made. First, we will always
need to improve our technology for better performance and according to suitability of situations. For
example in the case study, they replace the steel disc used in the tunnel boring machine (TBM) to
excavate with water jet system and diamond wire because they cost lower maintenance and easy to
repair. They don’t want mechanical contact between rocks and the machine to result a friendly
environment process. This is good for sustainability. Apart from that, there are models that we can
apply to measure the level of performance of tunnel boring machine (TBM) penetration rate. It is
important that we measure the performance so that we know if the excavation style that we use suitable
for that particular ground condition or not. It is found that the model of Graham is the most suitable for
TBM estimation performance because it is easily availability of input data.

Next, generally speaking, what can be seen is utilization is very vital in construction process. There
are many approach that can be used to calculate the percentage of utilization for example Monte Carlo.
For this purpose, we need to record every unit operation and save in data base. Utilization percentage is
important so that we know if we are in track with the working process plus improve any weakness.

Finally, what we can say about this paper is tunnel boring machine (TBM) is growing in demand
and very relevant in industry right now. This is because the process of excavation gives more
advantages than disadvantages compare to previous style of tunneling such as drilling and blasting. For
example, smoother walls created, improved safety, reducing ground disturbance and others. As the
works are done by machines, it can be automated and we also can predict the performance. It is very
economics.To sum up, there are many advance tunnel construction techniques. We should do research
and decide which technique is the most suitable and economics for that particular constructions.
However, based on many evidences, tests and many case study, we should agree that tunnel boring
machine (TBM) is suitable for excavation in most types of strata.
