2/12/20 Mini Project (50 Marks) Due date: one week before final

Problem Statement

Assume that a new expressway is proposed to be built along the west coast of Peninsular
Malaysia from Banting to Johor Bahru. Work is expected to commence next year. You company
is subcontracted to design a hot mix asphalt for the project. However, the difficult part is the
continued lockdown situation in Malaysia that is preventing any physical activities in any asphalt
laboratories in Malaysia. As such, the project consortium feels that it is timely to explore virtual
laboratory work to move forward and get prepared prior to the start of the project. This could
also be a kickstart to tailor the virtual work towards IR 4.0. Since there is no such established
protocol before, you are expected to work in your own group to plan a conceptual work flow and
execution in stages.

STAGE 1

Establish a format and procedure for data acquisition.

Device a technique to present and analyze virtual data
Run simple statistical relevance assessment
Report writing using auto digital format

Project: Package A

6-lane expressway
3.75 m lane width

Mixing bowl, spoon, spatula, filter papers
Mold, tamping rod, thermometers, gloves, goggles
Temperature settings. Place mixing bowl, mold in the oven and heat up.
4. Preparation of Mixing Table
Aggregate sample weight 1150 g
Binder contents: 4.0%, 4.5%, 5.0%, 5.5%, 6.0%
Determine the equation to estimate weight of AC
5. Mixing and Compaction Procedures
Place aggregate samples (15 +5) in the oven @ about 180 deg C
Place sufficient binder in the oven @ specified temperature (based
Viscosity-Temp chart)
Remove aggregate when ready. Place it in the bowl and transfer to weighing
padded scale. Make a depression in the middle. Pour precalculated amount
of bitumen. Excess bitumen can be removed using a tissue paper.
Give a thorough mixing and make sure aggregates are well coated. Place the
mixture in the oven for conditioning. 15 minutes should be sufficient
(temperature monitoring is needed). Remove mixture when ready and
transfer to mold. Compact initially using tamping rod. Use Spatula and pack
all around to get smooth finishing. Transfer the mold assembly to be
compacted both sides using Marshall compactor. Number of blows is 50.
Remove mold from collar and plate assembly and fan cool.
6. Sample Extrusion and Labeling
Extrude sample when temperature drops to warm. Label sample. Repeat the
process until all 15 samples are done. The extra 5 samples are for TMD of
loose mixture.
