Audience
This digital workshop will be offered to the teachers of the North Carolina Virtual Public
School as a part of their eLC (electronic learning community) work. An eLC is the
equivalent of a PLT, professional learning team, or PLC, professional learning community
in a brick and mortar school. At NCVPS, electronic learning communities are grouped by
subject area and department. At times professional development is incorporated into the
electronic learning communities and at times the eLC works together to share resources
and complete tasks that will benefit all teachers in the department, as well as benefit
students. This digital citizenship workshop will be an organization wide professional
development opportunity.
Content Description
The workshop will focus on raising awareness of important aspects of digital citizenship for
teachers, while offering ideas and ways to bring this awareness to students. Part of the
workshop will aim to educate teachers on the digital citizenship portion of the North
Carolina Digital Learning Competencies and the ITSE Digital Citizenship standards.
Teachers will model and teach digital citizenship by the ethical, respectful, and safe
use of digital tools and resources that support the creation of a positive digital
school culture.
Engage in responsible and professional digital social interaction.
Integrate digital citizenship curriculum into student learning.
Ensure full, equitable access and participation of all learners through high-quality
technology tools and resources.

The following International Society for Technology in Education (ITSE) standards will also
be addressed:
2a.students cultivate and manage their digital identity and reputation and
are aware of the permanence of their actions in the digital world.
2b. Students engage in positive, safe, legal, and ethical behavior when
using technology, including social interactions online or when using
networked devices.
2d. Students manage their personal data to maintain digital privacy and
security and are aware of data collection technology used to track their
navigation online.

I will also address: netiquette (briefly), cyberbullying, digital footprint, digital privacy and
digital identity.
Location
The Digital Citizenship Workshop will be offered online, with both synchronous and
asynchronous sessions. Synchronous instructional webinars will be offered via Adobe
Connect. Participants will attend the synchronous meetings and participate in discussions
and interactive activities via Adobe Connect. Participants will also complete work
asynchronously via Google Docs, Google Sheets and various web tools. All asynchronous
work will be reviewed by subject area Instructional Leaders for completion.
Timeline
The Digital Citizenship Workshop will be conducted over three sessions. The first session
will be a large group, synchronous webinar. Participants will complete asynchronous tasks
for the second session within a designated time frame. For the final session, participants
will meet synchronously with their smaller, electronic learning community groups to discuss
their findings and conclude with overall takeaways. The workshop will be offered in the
spring of 2019 on Monday evenings. The exact dates will be determined after meeting with
the Professional Learning and Curriculum and Instruction leadership teams.
Registration
I will make arrangements to offer this workshop through the Professional Learning
Department with agreement from our Curriculum and Instruction leadership team. The
workshop will be offered to the full organization. Attendance will be recorded in department
meeting documents by using the internal attendance tracker in Adobe Connect to collect
attendance data. Participants who are not be able to attend the scheduled sessions will
need to contact their Instructional Leader to make other arrangements. The synchronous
sessions will be recorded and archived for those who need to view at an alternate date.
Agenda
Cyberbullying:
Learn how to identify signs of cyberbullying
Learn how to collect evidence of cyberbullying
Learn how to report cyberbullying on popular social media sites
Learn to present positive ways to deal with cyberbullying to stop it
Learn examples of how kids are making a difference
Digital Footprint:
Participants will collect data and analyze their own digital footprint
Participants will understand the difference of a passive and active footprint
Participants will gain an understanding of positive and negative online interactions
Digital Privacy:
Material needed: Participants will need access to a computer, Google Drive/Suite, and a
Wi-Fi connection. It is also recommended to find a quiet space for the two synchronous
meetings.
Participant activities
First Synchronous Session: (one hour)
For the first synchronous meeting, I will use a Google Slides Presentation/ slide deck to
guide the discussion and presentation topics, while also utilizing the interactive features of
the webinar platform. I will include questions with interactive polls on the screen, for some
questions participants will be asked to type into the chat area and links to other tools such
as a Google Forms (diagnostic formative assessment) will be shared with participants for
participation.
Assessments: Participants will be given a formative assessment quiz using google forms
to check for basic understanding at the start of the first synchronous meeting. Participants
will be asked to take the same formative assessment quiz at the end of the last
synchronous session. Participants will submit asynchronous assignments via google form
questionnaire/survey. A copy of the participants’ responses will be sent to them via email
so they have record of their answers for the synchronous session discussions.
