BASIC ASSUMPTIONS ON TESTING AND ASSESSMENT
Instructions: For each assumption, discuss your understanding of the concepts clearly and concisely
as it relates to testing and assessment.
Assumption 1: Psychology Traits and States Exist
In my own understanding traits and states exist because we are all individually unique which is very
important in conducting test and assessment. I think the outcome of one's test is because of the traits
the individual have. Psychology traits covers a wide range of possible characteristics but psychology
traits exist only as construct and overt behavior.
construct- an informed, scientific concept developed or constructed to describe or explain behavior.
overt behavior - refers to an observable action or the product of an observable action, including test-
or assessment-related responses.
Assumption 2: Psychological Traits and States can be Quantified and Measured
knowing on the first assumption and acknowledging that traits and states exist the specific traits and
states to be measured and quantified needs to be carefully defined. Once it will be defined a test
developer consider and provide a test item that will give insight into it.
Assumption 3: Test- Related Behavior Predicts Non Test- Related Behavior
A test might predict some other types of behaviors, as what I understand Test can be used not only to
measure what you need to measure but it also serve as a way to predict other types of behaviors.
Example given in the pdf is patterns of answers to true–false questions on one widely used test of
personality are used in decision making regarding mental disorders. This is to say that conducting test
have many applications, it doesn't just measure it also predicts.
Assumption 4: Test and Other Measurement Techniques Have Strength and Weaknesses
Knowing that they have strength and weakness test users need to be competitive enough, it is stated
that this is the simplest assumption because it's commonsensical. Test users should be aware of the test
and its limitations, they should understand the great deal of the test they are using.
Assumption 5: Various Sources of Error Are Part of the Assessment Process
Error in Psychology refers to a long-standing assumption that factors other than what a test attempts
to measure will influence performance on the test, error traditionally refers to something that is more
than expected. Errors are part of the assessment process as stated errors are long-standing assumptions,
it is a variable that needs to be accounted that's why there is error variance. Error variance is the
component of a test score attributable to sources other than the trait or ability measured. Some
potential sources of errors are Assessee, Assessors and Measuring Instruments.
Assumption 6: Testing and Assessment Can Be Conducted in a Fair and Unbiased Manner
In my understanding this assumption is really a must although we can't avoid certain things to happen
but we should always remember that testing and assessment can be conducted in a fair an unbiased
way. It doesn't just lessen conflicts but it will help your study away from criticism and your test
vulnerable. Problems will always arise in any ways it can and we either solve it properly or improper, I
think in Psychology it works both ways.
Assumption 7: Testing and Assessment Benefit Society
Ofcourse it does!!! I really agree with the statement that in a world without test most likely be more of
a nightmare than a dream. Testing and Assessment benefit to society because it also serve as a guide
and it puts things into place. One great example I could give you why it is important to society is the
recent incident that have been circling the social media this past few days is the killings of the son and
the mother by a police man and because of this incident even Raffy Tulfo wants to propose that
personnel as such should undergo more test and have test regularly not just once. Because from time to
time we need to be keep in check, we need to be guided. Imagine a society without test... It's really a
nightmare for me.
