Heroes in Noli Me Tangere

1. Don Juan Crisostomo Ibarra y Magsalin


 Ibarra was showing sincere and intense conviction on
planning to help others or his fellow Filipinos.
 He made efforts on establishing a school in San Diego because
he believed that as individuals striving for new heights and
prosperity, it is through education.
 Ibarra as an idealistic person wanted to stop the cruelty of civil
guards and friars and he sought to improve the country.
 Ibarra was a kindhearted person and he is willing to fight for
the woman he loved even when things seem impossible.
 He wasn’t, however afraid to face fear and risk his own life for
the sake of people, that he became an inspiration to Elias.

2. Elias
 Elias was devoted to his country. Because of the injustices that
have befallen his family, he wanted to improve the social
conditions in his country.
 He also helped Ibarra on several conditions, that his own life is
in trouble in order to save him while on the lake by the hands
of civil guards.
 He convinced Ibarra to have reforms because he also sought to
prevent any increase in the number of criminals and unhappy
persons victimized by social injustices and prejudices.
 Elias was an altruistic man bound by a code of honor because
he dedicated himself to helping those also oppressed by
society.
 Before his last breath, he instructed Basilio to build a pyre and
cremate the body of his dead mother, but after Basilio returned
he saw Elias died.

Anti-Heroes in Noli Me Tangere

1. Padre Damaso
 He raped Donya Pia, resulting in death after she birthed a girl,
Maria Clara.
 Padre Damaso is self-assertive in a rude, noisy, and
overbearing way. Because during the celebratory dinner for
Ibarra’s school, he insulted the father of Ibarra.
 He is the anti-hero because he ignored the hero, Ibarra when
he respectfully greeted him during the party hosted by
Capitan Tiago.
 He hated Ibarra so much that he belittled Ibarra’s studied
abroad during the dinner and he gave a sermon, making
vague swipes at Ibarra on the day of the town fiesta.
 Also, he ordered a gravedigger to transfer the body of Don
Rafael after he buried in the parish cemetery to a Chinese
cemetery that leads to Padre Damaso be reassigned to another
parish as a punishment.

2. Padre Salvi
 Padre Salvi is the right-hand man and successor of Padre
Damaso. He possessed a manipulative act towards people in
the process.
 He also showed an intense sexual desire towards Maria Clara
and other women in their town.
 After Crispin allegedly accused of stealing two gold pieces
from the church coppers, he was presumably killed by the
hands of Padre Salvi along with the sacristan mayor.
 Padre Salvi planned to kill Ibarra when he made efforts on
establishing a school in San Diego.
 He pretended to be the town’s hero. He warned the alferez of
the forthcoming attack that was planned.
