In
this
module
we’re
going
to
learn
how
to
go
about
creating
SIPOC
diagrams.
By
the
end
of
this
module
you’ll
know
what
a
SIPOC
diagram
is,
when
to
use
it,
why
it’s
such
a
powerful
tool,
and
how
to
go
about
creating
one.
Let’s
get
started
by
first
explaining
what
a
SIPOC
diagram
is
as
well
as
when
to
use
it
and
why
it’s
such
a
powerful
tool.
Definition
of
SIPOC
A
SIPOC
is
a
high-‐level
process
map
used
to
better
understand
the
relationship
between
suppliers,
inputs,
the
process,
the
outputs,
and
the
internal
or
external
customers.
The
SIPOC
is
best
used
early
in
the
DMAIC
process
–
it
is
most
effective
when
used
during
the
define
phase
of
the
project.
A
SIPOC
can
be
used
anytime
there’s
a
need
to
better
understand
a
process,
even
if
it
isn’t
part
of
a
formal
project.
There
are
many
reasons
why
we
use
the
SIPOC
early
in
the
project
life
cycle.
First,
the
SIPOC
helps
us
to
define
the
project
boundaries,
while
also
identifying
both
suppliers
and
customers
of
the
process.
This
can
be
very
helpful
information
in
identifying
who
should
be
on
the
project
team.
The
SIPOC
also
helps
us
to
identify
key
process
inputs
and
outputs,
which
can
be
used
during
the
analysis
phase
of
the
project.
A
SIPOC
is
meant
to
be
a
high
level
process
map,
so
we
won’t
capture
every
input
and
output
to
a
process
with
our
SIPOC.
We’ll
learn
how
to
create
more
detailed
process
maps
that
help
us
to
really
focus
in
on
a
process
in
our
next
module.
Let’s
learn
how
to
create
our
own
SIPOC.
In
this
example,
we’re
using
PowerPoint
to
draw
the
diagrams,
which
is
a
popular
way
to
go
about
this.
We’ll
share
a
blank
template
in
the
resources
column
of
the
video
and
on
the
DVD
that
you
can
use.
Another
effective
way
to
create
a
SIPOC
is
by
gathering
your
team
together
and
documenting
the
process
on
a
white
board
or
large
piece
of
butcher
paper
spread
across
the
wall.
You
can
use
Post-‐it
notes
to
document
the
process,
which
makes
it
easy
to
collaborate
as
team.
Then,
once
you’re
happy
with
the
final
result,
you
can
capture
it
all
electronically
using
PowerPoint,
Excel,
or
other
mapping
tools
like
Visio
or
Minitab.
We’d
also
encourage
you
to
do
your
SIPOCs
quickly.
Assuming
you
have
a
team
that
understands
the
process,
you
should
be
able
to
complete
an
excellent
SIPOC
within
an
hour
or
two.
Creating
a
SIPOC
1) Identify
the
starting
and
ending
points
of
the
process
being
studied.
In
this
example
we’re
simply
calling
Step
1
the
first
step
and
Step
6
the
last
step.
2) Fill
in
the
main
process
steps.
Since
the
SIPOC
is
meant
to
be
a
high
level
map,
you
should
not
have
more
than
7
total
steps,
including
the
first
and
last
steps.
We’ll
learn
about
additional
types
of
process
maps
later,
but
our
focus
with
the
SIPOC
is
to
gain
a
better
understanding
of
the
overall
process.
3) Identify
the
outputs
of
the
process.
In
other
words,
what
does
the
process
make?
What
information
is
produced?
And
when
the
process
is
complete,
what
will
we
have?
4) Identify
the
customers
of
the
outputs.
In
other
words,
who
uses
and
benefits
from
the
outputs?
Who
uses
the
information
provided
by
the
output?
Please
keep
in
mind
that
an
output
may
have
more
than
one
customer.
5) Identify
the
inputs
to
the
process.
For
example,
what
flows
into
the
process?
And
what
raw
materials,
resources,
and
information
are
needed
in
order
to
produce
the
product
or
service
provided
by
the
process?
Again,
a
process
step
will
likely
have
multiple
inputs,
so
be
sure
to
list
them
all.
6) Identify
the
suppliers
of
the
inputs.
In
other
words,
who
supplies
the
materials
and
information
needed?
SIPOC
Example
For
this
example,
the
process
we’re
going
to
focus
on
is
making
a
single
cup
of
coffee
with
a
Keurig
coffee
machine.
For
those
who
aren’t
familiar
with
these
machines,
here’s
what
one
looks
like.
The
canister
on
the
left
holds
the
water
and
the
coffee
grinds
are
inside
something
called
a
K-‐Cup.
Once
the
K-‐Cup
is
inserted
and
the
lid
is
closed,
a
single
cup
of
coffee
can
be
brewed.
For
this
example,
the
starting
point
is
to
add
water
to
the
coffee
machine
and
the
last
step
is
to
add
creamer.
We
then
add
in
the
rest
of
the
steps
which,
in
this
example,
is
to
insert
the
K-‐Cup,
position
coffee
cup,
press
the
brew
button,
remove
the
coffee
cup,
and
add
creamer.
The
output
of
this
process
is
1
cup
of
hot
coffee
and
1
empty
K-‐Cup.
The
customers
of
the
process
are
myself,
my
family
members,
and
any
guests
that
may
receive
a
cup
of
coffee.
Next,
the
inputs
to
the
process
are
water,
electricity,
K-‐Cups,
a
Keurig
coffee
making
machine,
a
coffee
mug,
and
the
instructions
on
how
to
operate
the
machine.
Finally,
the
suppliers
of
these
inputs
are
the
water
filtration
system,
which
provides
the
water,
the
electric
company,
the
grocery
store,
which
provides
the
K-‐Cups,
the
Gemba
Academy
swag
store,
which
provides
the
coffee
cup,
and
the
Keurig
company
itself,
which
provided
the
Keurig
machine
and
instructions
on
how
to
operate
the
machine.
So,
at
a
high
level,
this
is
the
SIPOC
for
making
a
single
cup
of
coffee
in
my
home.
And
while
this
was
a
simple
example,
please
know
that
any
process,
whether
it
is
manufacturing
or
service
related,
can
benefit
from
the
SIPOC
approach.
Finally,
there
are
other
ways
to
present
a
SIPOC.
One
method,
which
we
call
the
column
format,
simply
lists
the
process
steps
down
the
column
instead
of
in
a
process
flow
chart.
The
one
danger
with
this
approach
is
when
people
feel
like
there
can
only
be
a
single
input
or
single
output
for
each
process
step.
This
isn’t
the
case
at
all,
so
if
you
do
use
this
column
format
be
careful
to
not
fall
into
this
trap.
