The set

The set in mathematics is defined as a collection of clearly-defined objects. The set has a
single member where there are no equal members in a set. A collection of all members found
in a set is called the universal set (S).

A. The set and notation

1. Definition of Set
The set is a collection of objects / objects that can be clearly defined.
Example:
1) A collection of beautiful flowers.
We can not call the set because the beautiful flower is relative (beautiful flowers
according to someone not necessarily beautiful according to others). In other words,
the collection of beautiful flowers can not be clearly defined.
2) The group of junior high school students who travel to the gods MUHI is also a set.
Why? The reason is the students who travel the island of the gods can be known
clearly.

2. Declare a Set
A set can be expressed by:
1) A sentence
2) Set-up notation
3) Sign up for members
To name a set commonly used capital letters.
Example:
H are figures who had been president of Indonesia before the 2009 election. State
the set with the above three ways:
Answer:
1) With a sentence
H = {figures who ever became president before the 2009 election}
2) With set formation notation:
H = {x | x = figures who ever became president before the 2009 election}
3)By registering its members
H = {Soekarno, Soeharto, B.J. Habibie, Abdurrahman Wahid, Megawati, Susilo
Bambang Yudoyono}

B. Member of the Association

Every object / object belonging to a set is called a member / element / element of the
set. To declare an object a member of the set, it is written with the symbol "∈" while
to declare a non-object, the set member is written with the symbol "∉"
Let H be the set of letters in the word "MERDEKA" then H is the set whose members
consist of the letters M, E, R, D, E, K and A. The letters M, E, R, D, E, K and A
include members of the set H.
The number of members of set H is 6, ie M, E, R, D, E, K and A are written n (H) = 6.
A set with many finite members is called a set up, whereas a set with many infinite
members is called infinite set.
For example, A is the set of natural numbers, then the members are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and
so on that never end. Many members of set A are infinite, written n (A) = infinite.

C. The Section Set

If we consider, each member of set B is a member of set A, written B ⊂ A and each

member of set C is a member of set B, written C ⊂ B. However, we can not write A ⊂
B because there are members A that are not members of B , ie birds. Therefore such a
set is written A ⊄ B. Determining many subsets
Consider the following sets!
A = {a}, the number of subsets is 2 ie {a} and ∅
A = {a, b}, the number of subsets is 4 ie {a} {b} {a, b} and A
A = {a, b, c}, the number of subsets is 8 ie {a} {b} {c} {a, b} {a, c} {b, c} {a, b, c}
and A

The Set of the Universe

The universe or universe of speech is the set that contains all the objects being
discussed. This means that the universe of conversation has members of the same or
more than the set that is being discussed. The universal set is also called the universal
set and symbolized S or U.
