heard already the subject Mariology. If they say ―” yes”, try again to ask them of what
is their understanding of Mariology. If they say ―”no”, try to ask them who is Mary
for them. Write their answers below:

Person1: Cresdon Louven Murillo

According to Mr. Cresdon Louven Murillo, “Yes. I have heard the subject
Mariology. Theologically, Mariology is the study relating to Maria - the Blessed Virgin
Mother of Jesus. It teaches us all about Mary. It seeks doctrines that explains the role of
Mary on past centuries until now.”

Person 2: Catherine O. Aluba

According to Ms. Catherine O. Aluba, “No, I haven’t heard that.”
“Mary for me is Jesus' mother whom we adore and also is like our own mom. For me,
Mary is like a mom whom I can tell my problems to and share my experiences when things
are tough. She is a divine help for me and she is also my inspiration because of how pure
and how kind-hearted she is.”

According to Mrs. Merry Mosquito, “Yes, I have heard that subject, Mariology.
Though I was not able to attend such class with Mariology subject, I still understand what it
teaches about. Mariology is a subject related to Theology which tackles about the life of our
Blessed Virgin Mary, the reasons why she is called the Mother of the Church and her
significance Jesus’ saving action.”

Now it’s your turn. Have you heard already the word ―Mariology’? If yes, what is
your initial understanding of this subject? If no, who is Mary for you?
Answer:
Yes, I have heard about this subject before because since senior high years, I have
been studying on a Catholic school, which is SJC, and we are always introduced to topics
that are related to religion, specifically, about Roman catholic beliefs. My initial
understanding about this subject is that it teaches about the life of Mama Mary and it
tackles about the doctrines and other theories that would explain her role and significance
of Jesus’ existence here on Earth before. Also, Mariology provides justifications regarding
the different titles that are given to Mary and on which she is highly praised and known for
to all Christians.

2. Mariology teaches us the importance of the Mother of God in the history of salvation.

FALSE STATEMENTS:
1. Mary is a goddess that is why she is part of the discipline Theology.
2. Mariology is not significant in the life of the Church.
 Answer the following briefly and substantially (5 points each):
1. What is Mariology?
Based on the definition in the module and my understanding to it, Mariology
is the theological and systematic study of Blessed Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus. It
studies about Mary’s life and her role in the economy of salvation, within the theology
of the Catholic Church. Mariology tends to teach us the significance of Mary in the
history of salvation-from fulfilling the mission of bearing the child of God until the day
that Her son, Jesus, fulfilled his mission of saving humanity. Roman catholic Mariology
doesn’t only studies about her life but also the veneration of her daily life-from
prayers, virtues, wisdoms, hymns, art, music and architecture in modern and ancient
Christianity throughout the ages. Moreover, there are four elements that form basis of
Mariology and these are known as the four dogmas of Mary: The Perpetual Virginity,
Mother of God, Immaculate Conception, and Assumption. These four dogmas state the
important aspects of Mary’s role in salvation and her personal relationship with God.

2. Why is Mariology an essential part of Theology?

Mariology has a significant relationship with the Theology discipline or it has
an essential part in it. It has been said that we cannot fully understand and know
Jesus just by seeing Him as the Son of God alone, thus, we have to dig deeper in
knowing his origins and that includes understanding Him on his human identity,
being a born child of a human, Mary. Blessed Virgin Mary is a big part of Jesus’ life
because it is through her He was able to do God’s plan for humanity, the salvation. To
study theology, it is crucial that we study about Mary, too. Our catholic faith believes
that Mary is based on what we believe about Jesus and what it teaches about Mary
illumines in turn its faith in Christ. Thus, these two disciplines that teaches us more
about our Catholic faith is inseparable.

3. Give one reason why we need to study Mary and explain briefly.
We need to study Mary because she is the perfect example and guide for us to
fully understand what it feels to accept God in our lives and what it means to respond
to God’s revelation in Jesus Christ. Her acceptance and obedience to God brought us
our Lord and God’s plan for humanity was able to be taken in place. It is through Mary
and her relationship with Jesus Christ, we can understand the life of his Son, our
savior. Mother Mary is a beautiful example of how God can transform us from being
ordinary people into extraordinary ones. Aside from being an important symbol in
the Catholic Faith, we need to study Mary because of her significant influence in our
personal journey as Catholics. In learning Mary’s values and characteristics, it would
help us reflect within ourselves the importance of living with faith, humility,
compassion, love, simplicity, and that of charity just like how she lived her life.
