A guided essay (napravljen primjer)

THE TASK:

Young drivers are a threat to road safety. Others disagree.

Discuss both views and give your opinion. Write 200-250 words.

ESSAY FORMAT:

A: THE INTRODUCTION
A good introduction has:

a) a sentence or two which introduce the topic

b) a THESIS STATEMENT= tells the reader specifically what the essay will be
about.

FACT: Road injuries are the leading cause of death among 15-25-year-olds.

Nowadays, more and more young people are getting killed or seriously
injured in car accidents. It's a fact that road injuries are the leading cause
of death among 18-25-year-olds. This is why young drivers are often
considered a safety threat in traffic. Are young drivers a danger on our
roads or not?
BODY PARAGRAPH 1

A) TOPIC SENTENCE: young drivers pose a serious threat on the roads

ARGUMENT 1: age + support (they are fearless & take risks; peer pressure-
alcohol)
ARGUMENT 2: inexperience + support (control of the vehicle; can’t make driver
decisions with confidence)

On the one hand, young drivers are/pose a serious threat on the roads.
Firstly, they are dangerous drivers because of their age. Young people are
usually fearless and enjoy taking risks, especially since they want to
prove themselves in front of their peers. For example, they often drink
and drive thinking nothing bad could ever happen to them. Secondly,
young drivers are inexperienced drivers. Therefore, they don’t have
control of the vehicle and they can’t make driver decisions with
confidence and on time to avoid accidents.
BODY PARAGRAPH 2

A) TOPIC SENTENCE: young drivers are not the only ones to blame for the
decrease of road safety
ARGUMENT 1: increase of road crashes among all age groups (older drivers
-health issues)
ARGUMENT 2: inexperience + support (they drive more carefully)

On the other hand, young drivers are not the only ones to blame for the
decrease of road safety. First of all, unfortunately there has been an
increase of road crashes involving all age groups. For example, older
drivers are also irresponsible while driving due to different factors such as
over-confidence or different health issues. Furthermore, young drivers are
inexperienced drivers, so they drive more carefully and use familiar
routes. They have just received their driving licence so their knowledge of
traffic rules is fresh, so they are less likely to break them.

C: THE CONCLUSION
A good conclusion consists of:

a) a general summary (you restate the main point of each of the body
paragraphs

b) your opinion

All things considered, it’s true that more and more young people get
seriously injured or die in road accidents as a result of their age and
inexperience. However, there are other factors that pose a threat to road
safety such as older drivers. In my opinion, it all depends on the
character of individual drivers and their level of responsibility when they
are driving a car so age is of little importance.
