Background of the author
Emilio Jacinto y Dizon was considered as one of the greatest military genius during his

time and a Filipino General during the Philippine Revolution happened on the year 1875 to 1899.

He was one of the highest-ranking officers in the Philippine Revolution and was one of the

highest-ranking officers of the revolutionary society Kataas-taasan, Kagalang-galang na

Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan, or simply and more popularly called Katipunan, being a

member of its Supreme Council. He was also appointed by Anders Bonifacio as a Supreme

Commander of the North. Emilio Jacinto was only 19 when he joined the Katipunan and he was

known as the brains of the Katipunan when it comes to military matters. He was elected as the

Secretary of State for the Haring Bayang Katagalugan, a revolutionary government established

during the outbreak of hostilities. Emilio Jacinto were also present in the so-called Cry of Pugad

Lawin or Cry of Balintawak with Andres Bonifacio, the Supremo or Supreme President of the

Katipunan, and others of its members which signalled the start of the Revolution against the

Spanish colonial government in the islands.

Historical background of the document

The Kartilya ng Katipunan was used as an instrument to introduce the principles and

values that should unite each member of the organization to new recruits. The Kartilya was

written by Emilio Jacinto that would serve as the guidebook of the Kataastaasan kagalang-

galangan katipunan ng mga anak ng bayan (KKK). Andres Bonifacio, the founder of KKK, wrote a

similar guidebook titled “Katungkulang Gagawin ng mga Z. Ll. B” but, it was never published

because the Kartilya ng Katipunan was Emilio’s best work.

Content presentation and analysis of the important historical information found in the

document

Katipunan is important organization that shaped Philippine history. It created a defined

value system that would guide the organization single goal. It was formed to unite Filipinos that

would revolt against the Spaniards for total independence and equality. Jacinto set some rules

and principles to serve as a guide and lead its members. The members should do their duties

wholeheartedly for their country and need to take an oath.

Contribution and relevance of the document in understanding the grand narrative of Philippine

History

Emilio Jacinto was a great proof of “Kabataan ang Pag-asa ng Bayan” for the things he

accomplished at a young age for our beloved country and countrymen. The Kartilla ng Katipunan

which he wrote contained the policies and oaths that needs to be followed if you were to join

the Katipuneros. Those oaths emphasize on justice, unselfishness, unity, brotherhood,

willingness, and patriotism all for the good of our beloved country. It also talks about individuals

are to be punished accordingly upon breaking the rules. The teachings of the Katipunan contained

morality, virtues, and direction in order to guide our Katipuneros, Filipinos today should depict

those traits in the teachings of the Katipunan. This document is of great importance as it should

be a guide for us Filipinos to become united and to eliminate corruption, the government should

portray those oaths made by the Katipunan.

The Kartilla ng Katipunan made us modern day Filipinos aware of the fact that Filipinos

back in the day we’re united, treated each other equally like brothers and unselfish for the sake

of our country’s independence. The document showed us the importance of morality of our

Katipuneros in order to achieve the independence we cherish today.

Personal Insights

Kartilya ng Katipunan is a collection of concepts that illustrates how every one of us must

live our lives to the fullest through good values. I assume that this Kartilya ng Katipunan has been

done to improve the thinking of any objectionable action of the Filipinos. Katipunan was not

simply an organization working for the liberation of the Filipino people. They were founded on

the ideological and political base of men and women who dedicated themselves to their love of

the land and of the people. Much like Rizal, who pushed Filipinos to think objectively with

complete comprehension, this code of conduct was put in place to remind people about what

they need to know for commenting. Moving back to the past, the journey to liberation is long

and difficult. The price of courage and principle is high. Back then, they felt that the day of

absolute independence would remain a fantasy forever. And by Kartilya ng Katipunan, the

Filipinos were mobilized to fight for what they had. Kartilya ng Katipunan has been an oath that

any Katipuneros must obey to demonstrate their commitment to being part of the people who

desired reform.
