RECEPTION AREAS & WAITING AREAS
The two most important planning elements are
• the visitor’s seating area and
• the receptionist’s workstation or desk.

The minimum height of the opening above the floor has been
established at 78 in or 198.1 cm. Sitting height and eye height
are significant in providing unobstructed vision.

The depth of the worksurface ranges from 26 or 30 in or 66 to

76.2 cm. allowing for thumb tip reach requirement for the
exchange of papers and packages

SWIMMING POOL
Steel reinforced concrete pools
The most common material used in community swimming pool construction is steel
reinforced concrete.
➢ However, there are two different application methodologies – fully formed and sprayed –
which create different results.

● Fully formed and poured concrete

swimming pools that are designed and built
to the appropriate codes will have an
expected life of more than 50 years.

• Length • Short course -

25m (82ft)
• Long Course -
● Sprayed concrete is applied using an air
50m (164 ft)
compressor (i.e. pneumatically). The ground
•Width • Between 10 m is first excavated to the exact shape and
(32 ft) and 50 m (164 dimensions of the pool.
ft)wide.
Pool capacities may be determined by dividing the water SWIMMING POOL
surface area by 2.
Thus a 25 x 13 m pool can accommodate to
reasonable comfort standards 325 ÷ 2 = 162 bathers

Changing cubicles and lockers can be based upon the same

analysis plus the following allowances:

● Locker allowance based upon pool capacity, with a

further 162 changing = 324 lockers, usually in two- to
three-tiercompartments
● Changing cubicle provision may be based upon a time
factor of 5–10-minute occupation per bather. Thus in
any one hour 162 bathers in the pool plus a further
162 changing ready to enter the pool = 324 bathers ÷
10 minutes = 32cubicles
Flow & Functionality
Locker positioning also needs proper
planning. Ideally, this needs to be centred
between wet and dry areas. Users need to be
able to access them when wet, without
traipsing their soggy selves all over the
changing area.

Materials
● Tiles that have excellent non-slip features,
which can also withstand hard objects falling
on them
● May choose a ruberised safety flooring as
found in hospitals
● Toilet, shower and changing cubicles all need
to withstand the aforementioned wet
environment and for this recommended is solid
grade laminate (SGL)
● Another cubicle material suited to swimming
pool changing rooms is reinforced glass
panels.
OUTDOOR SPORTS
BASKET BALL

● Basketball court dimensions and size have some variation based

on the level of play
● Regular basketball court dimensions are 94 feet long by 50 feet
wide 28.65 meters long by 15.24 meters wide
● Basketball court size varies depending on the league and level of
play
● International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and Olympic basketball
courts call for the court to be slightly smaller at 91.9 feet by 49.2
feet. In meters, that’s 28 by 15 meters

Note the paint area in NBA – the free throw lane – is

16 feet across. The foul line is 15 feet from the face of
the backboard and 2 inches wide.
And in college court and hiegh school – the free throw
lane is 12 feet across. The faul line is 15 feet.
VOLLEY BALL
•The FIVB requires that the volleyball court surface must be a symmetrical rectangle, with dimensions of 18 meters (or 59 feet) long by 9 meters (or
29.5 feet) wide. Each side of the court measures 9 meters by 9 meters square

Recommended Area
Ground space is 4000 sq ft

Size and Dimension Playing court is 30 X 60 ft plus 6

ft minimum, 10 ft preferred, unobstructed space on all
sides .
Orientation Preferred orientation is for the long axis
to be north-south

Surface and Drainage Recommended

surface for intensive use is to be bituminous
material or concrete, but sand-clay or turf
may be used for informal play Drainage is
to be end to end, side to side or corner to
corner at a minimum slope of 1 in . i n 10 ft

DRAINAGE. SURFACE AND DRAINAGE
Drainage may be from end to end, side to side, or corner to corner diagonally
at a minimum slope of 1 inch in 10 ft for pavement and level for sand-clay 1. Surface may be concrete,
with underdrainage. or bituminous material with
specialized protective color
coating, or sand-clay.

2. Clay courts are made of

compressed shale, stone,
or brick. While they are
relatively easy and cheap
to install, long-term
maintenance can be quite
expensive, particularly
when compared to the
costs of artificial Tennis
court surfaces.

3. Hard courts are made of a

uniform rigid material, with
an acrylic or rubber
surface layer, offering
greater consistency of
bounce than other outdoor
surfaces. Pvc turf grass
could also be used.

CRICKET
A cricket practice area is made up of up to four components pitches,
Netcage, infill surround and extended run ups.

• Pitch Configuration

A standard practice pitch set-up is 11.0m batting end and 8.0m

bowling end.

• Netcages

Minimum 18.3m length is recommended with full surround and division

netting and 7.32m roof netting over the batting ends to prevent balls from
top-edged hook shots etc. from flying out of the nets.

• Synthetic Infill Surrounds

Extending 30cm outside the net-cage the Infills are laid on a

45mm compacted thickness of hard-porous material to
maintain good levels

• Extended Run Ups

The usual lengths recommend are either 4m or 8m

although any length is available.
