NORDSTROM, INC.

Nordstrom, Inc. is an American luxury department store chain. Founded in 1901 by John W.
Nordstrom and Carl F. Wallin, it originated as a shoe store and evolved into a full-line
retailer with departments for clothing, footwear, handbags, jewellery, accessories, cosmetics,
and fragrances. Some stores feature home furnishings and wedding departments, and several
have in-house cafes, restaurants, and espresso bars.

As of 2021, Nordstrom operates 100 stores in 40 U.S. states, and three Canadian provinces

A BRIEF HISTORY OF NORDSTROM

1901 – Start Journey of Nordstrom

In 1887, John W. Nordstrom, at 16 years old, left Sweden for the United States. He arrived in
New York with $5 in his pocket, unable to speak a word of English.

The young immigrant laboured in mines and logging camps as he crossed the country to
California and Washington. In 1897, he headed north to Alaska and the Klondike in search of
gold. Two years later, he returned to Seattle with a $13,000 stake, ready to settle down.

Carl F. Wallin, a Seattle shoemaker Nordstrom had met in Alaska, offered him a partnership
in a shoe store. In 1901, they opened their first store, Wallin & Nordstrom, on Fourth and
Pike in Seattle.

The business grew and, in 1923, the partners added a second store in Seattle's University
District.

In 1928, John retired and sold his share of the company to his sons Everett and Elmer. Carl
Wallin retired a year later and also sold his share to the Nordstrom sons. John's third son,
Lloyd, joined the team in 1933.

1960-A Growing Reputation

By 1960, the downtown Seattle shoe shop had become the largest shoe store in the country,
and the company, now with eight locations in Washington and Oregon, was the largest
independent shoe chain in the United States.

Looking for new ways to spread its wings, Nordstrom ventured into the women's clothing
market with the purchase of Seattle-based Best's Apparel in 1963.

In 1968, the three Nordstrom brothers handed the company over to the third generation:
Everett's son Bruce, Elmer's sons James and John, Lloyd's son-in-law Jack, and family friend
Bob Bender.
Going public in 1971, the company was formally renamed Nordstrom, Inc. Two years later,
annual sales surpassed $100 million, and the company was recognized as the largest-volume
fashion specialty store on the West Coast.

1973-A National Expansion

In 1973, the first Nordstrom Rack opened as a clearance center in the basement of the
downtown Seattle store.

By 1975, Nordstrom had expanded into Alaska. Three years later the company entered the
competitive California market. And in 1988, it opened its first East Coast store in Virginia.

Expansion continued across the U.S. throughout the 1990s and into the next decade.

In 1998, Nordstrom began serving customers online at Nordstrom.com. By 2009, Nordstrom

had implemented industry-leading inventory management and order fulfillment capabilities to
provide a seamless shopping experience both online and in stores. That same year, Nordstrom
began shipping orders abroad, and it currently serves 96 countries online.

2000-2018-International Expansion

In September 2014, Nordstrom opened its first Canada store at Chinook Centre in Calgary.

Nordstrom furthered its expansion in Canada in 2015, 2016 and 2017 with the opening of
full-line stores in Ottawa, British Columbia and Toronto. The company has plans to open
Nordstrom Rack stores in Canada starting in 2018.

In 2015, Nordstrom also opened a full-line store at The Mall of San Juan in Puerto Rico.

Nordstrom Today

Today, Pete and Erik Nordstrom serve as co-presidents of Nordstrom, Inc., and manage the
company along with the executive team. From one tiny shoe store, Nordstrom has grown into
a leading fashion retailer with global reach. It offers an unparalleled selection of shoes,
clothing, accessories, home goods and gifts—and an extensive range of services to make
shopping fun, personalized and convenient
DEPARTMENTS AT NEWTIMES GROUP
An apparel Buying House is an export trading & sourcing organisation that seeks to manage
the supply chain for retailers & brands.

Through this network, the company provides its customers (the retailers & brands) with fast,
flexible, and cost-efficient access to a comprehensive range of consumer products.
Emphasis is put on sourcing efficiency, cost efficiency and delivering quality products on
time.

The objective is to satisfy the business needs of the client companies efficiently, adding value
& enhancing profitability at all times.

To attain this objective, Newtimes Group has following departments:

DESIGN TEAM
There is a dedicated design team for each brand. The designers give inputs based on buyer
specifications and factory inputs to come up with solutions to the problems and work as an
intermediator to achieve feasibility.

These designs after the buyer approval are forwarded to the factories for further sampling or
production.

FABRIC TEAM

Newtimes group provides the services of a fabric technologist through their specialist
department. Fabric Technologists are involved in sourcing & developing fabrics with
suppliers in conjunction with the merchandising team.

For woven, they prefer sourcing fabric as a whole whereas for knitwear products, they prefer
to source yarns rather than fabrics, for which they visit specific trade fairs of yarn suppliers.
It is their responsibility to source the trims like labels, embellishments, and buttons as per
requirement of the style.

Again, not every team has a separate raw material sourcing department. In some cases, like
Nordstrom, the merchandisers seek help from sourcing departments of other teams and do the
sourcing themselves.

PRODUCTION
The production begins once the order is confirmed by the buyer. Order confirmation mail is
sent by the buyer to the merchandiser who has details about style, item code, fabric quality &
quantity of garments.

In a buying house, the role of production department is to work closely with the factory to
keep production of styles as per the schedule and to push important styles at priority.

They are also responsible for chart updatation as per the stage at which the samples are at.

TECHNICAL DEPARTMENT
Newtimes group, Gurgaon has highly experienced technicians that continuously monitor fits
with advanced pattern making skills, studying of marker plans and highly evolved
understanding of women’s wear fit and drape.
.
The tech team ensures the following:

 Feasibility of garment construction

 Fit on mannequin
 The pattern: as per the tech-pack

The vendors first submit a rough body to the merchandiser which goes to the tech-team to
check the construction of the garment. This rough body may be made in the available fabric
and trims.

As per the comments, the vendors make the proto sample. Thus a range of submits are sent to
buyer based on their comments. At following stages, the samples are checked, re-checked and
worked by the buyer.

Pre-production sample is made on the base size whereas the sealer samples are the closure
samples used for bulk production. It is made in actual trims, fabric incorporating all the
preproduction comments.

QUALITY ASSURANCE DEPARTMENT

With the aim to reduce rejection and improve efficiency, Newtimes group has a Quality
Assurance Team for each division. It sees intensive pre-production planning with utmost
focus on quality from prototype to bulk production. The team adheres very stringently to
AQL 1.0-2.5 based on customer requirement.
Quality Controller’s role involves ensuring that the garments in the merchandiser’s range
conform to the quality standards set by the retailer/brand. The merchandiser & QC are likely
to be involved together mostly in fitting sessions, which often take place on a weekly basis
during key times within the season. The QCs are responsible for commenting on the technical
aspects as well as compliance to standards & safety regulations. The QCs run the final audit
or inspection before sending the garment to the buyer.

ACCOUNTS DEPARTMENT
The department manages all the accounts related employees, salaries, bonuses, promotions
etc. Also manages every challan required for the samples and fabric when needed to move
out of the company. They also look after the accounts of the visitors.
