Open Ended Lab of

Particle Technology

Summary:

We have to produce Calcium Carbonate 200 g weight of 30 mesh size. Followings are
some points of summary of this experiment:
 We have Ultra-fine, Hammer Mill, Ball Mill and Smooth roll crusher for fine crushing.
But we have to check more efficient equipment of all with respect to size reduction and
loss of waste. Hammer Mill and Ball Mill gave 48% and 46% efficiency of 30 mesh size
respectively. On the other hand, ultra-fine present in given lab gave 95% efficiency with
respect to 30 mesh size but it wastes 50% approximately of feed to product. But more
efficient of all these equipments is Smooth roll crusher which gave 54 % efficiency of 30
mesh size that is larger amongst all, So, we choose Smooth roll crusher for crushing.
 Spacing between rollers is taken very small near to zero.
 We have energy meter from which we can calculate our cost for crushing.
 Waste material of bigger size than 30 mesh can be used easily as mentioned in
introduction.
 We can calculate the cost and efficiency for large amount of limestone by this small
amount of limestone data.

Experimental Details:

Introduction:

Powder of Calcium Carbonate is required for chemical reaction and further

processing of 200 g with 30 mesh.
So, we have to prepare powder of Limestone (CaCO3) 200 g weight of 30 mesh.
We have already done our size reductions of bricks in all equipments of lab. We know
the average results of every equipment, so it is easy to choose the equipment with 30
mesh size with more efficiency. The equipment that is more efficient of given size is
Smooth Roll Crusher with minimum spacing approximately zero.
Procedure:

We complete the job using Smooth roll crusher with following steps:
1. In our research survey, smooth roll crusher gives 54% of 30 mesh size
and we want 200 g of 30 mesh size. So, we take 400 g in feed.
2. First of all, we set the spacing between two rollers.
3. We reduce some size of limestone with the help of hammer.
4. Take the linear representative size of feed with the help of Vernier
callipier.
5. We inlet our feed into crusher and not down the Energy used in crushing
time.
6. We take out our feed and separates it into 30 mesh and above size.
7. We measure the weight of 30 mesh and collect 200 g of 30 mesh size.
Calculations:

Revolutions = 3
3
Energy = kWh
30
= 0.1 kWh
Price per unit = Rs. 5.11 per 1 kWh
For 0.1 kWh = 5.11×0.1
Energy price of crushing of limestone = 0.511 rupees

Price of smooth roll crusher = 77500 rupees

Waste and utilization:

 In sense of 30 mesh size is required, so all larger particles that are separated
through screens are called as waste.
 So, about 48% is waste in this experiment that is of larger size than 30 mesh.
 It can be utilized as a usage of calcium carbonate common uses.
 It can be used in white-wash material as a pigment or to make chalk by different
processes.
 On commercially, It can be used in many different types such as cement
manufacturing or as mineral in paints, paper or plastic.
Results:

Equipment used in this experiment = Smooth roll crusher

Operating cost for crushing = Rs. 0.511
Waste product = 194 g
Waste utilization = White-wash pigment or chalk
manufacturing.
