CAREER OVERVIEW

Proven success in leading a team tasked with designing and delivering innovative, efficient, and cost-effective
solutions for very complex technical problems. I thrive on helping to develop amazing solutions to the most
challenging problems (and situations), helping to create key insights to manage complexity – with a eye towards
big pictures goals such as monetization models, business processes, unique selling propositions, and other business-
driven considerations.

My experience and expertise spans a wide range including IA/UI/UX design/development, database systems,
systems integration, custom algorithms, handling abstraction within the context of large problem spaces that require
rich, large-scale, flexible data structures/architectures, and researching, evaluating and integrating 3rd party, open
source and "mashup-able" tools and platforms.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

EMA, Syracuse, NY (www.mower.com, marketing/advertising/PR: 220+ in 7 cities) Aug 2003 – Present

Director of Technology
 Principal Architect and Lead Developer of the JAZZ Personalization Server technology – a custom,
(proprietary), tailored communications language and platform for developing medium/output agnostic tailored
(one-to-one) messaging for web sites (landing pages, etc.), email campaigns and PDFs for tailored print (digital
print, direct mail). JAZZ has been used successfully for over 5 years on large web projects and extensive
campaigns (email and print) for clients such as Motorola, FedEx, McNeil Pharmaceuticals (Tylenol PM),
Kinko's, OKI and Emerson. JAZZ powers the new ClosetMaid (Emerson) site launching February 2011.
 The architect and lead developer of EMA’s “Campaign Manager" – a bespoke campaign management system
built on top of the SaleForce.com's "Force.com" cloud platform for setting up, managing and tracking the
results, of thousands of individual campaign source codes spread across dozens of EMA clients.
 Campaign Manager builds a multi-client structure on top of SaleForce.com’s multi-tenant architecture –
designed to accommodate transaction computation constraints inherent in cloud platforms (Salesforce.com
governor limits, etc.). The data structure features a 7 level analytics hierarchy that includes over 100 custom
(Apex) classes, workflows and triggers, over 50 custom SalesForce objects and more than 1000 custom fields.
 Campaign Manager integrates with our email delivery partner (ExactTarget), and in 2010 we added rules driven
Lead Nurturing capabilities. Campaign Manager houses over 700,000 Leads and has been used successfully for
clients such as Motorola, FedEx, Mattel, Bausch & Lomb, Mead, Remington, Lactalis, and Premier Global
Services.
 In addition to SalesForce, Campaign Manager is also built on an extensive PHP (OOP) infrastructure that
handles the serving of tailored landing pages, the dynamic creation of forms, the integration with custom
SalesForce classes (Apex) exposed as web services, as well as the mirroring of response data in a MySQL data
warehouse for the purposes of increased robustness (recoverability, and no downtime even when SalesForce is
unavailable), greater performance, avoiding SalesForce governor limits, and increased analytics granularity.
 In a matrix org structure, managed, along with the Director of Operations, between 5 and 12 web developers,
interface developers, flash developers, and back end developers. They reported to the Director of Operations for
day to day tasking, and to me for technology, code best practices, systems and solutions architecture.
 Worked closely with Director of Operations to develop estimates, budgets and timelines for projects. In
addition, helped develop workflow processes and systems to manage projects efficiently.
 Responsible for researching, evaluating and recommending new technologies and technical solutions and
architectures among the various available options, as well as articulating the rationale for their selection.
 Helped develop and implement the architecture and integration plan for the new ClosetMaid.com (budget > $1
million) – coordinating the efforts of, and integrating the use of JAZZ (for user experience personalization)
with Emerson corporate IT, the eCommerce vendor, the MOSS consultants and a 3D design app developer.
 Headed EMA’s Marketing Automation Task Force: led research and evaluation of best available MA
solution(s).
 Technical architect on iSlumber, an individually tailored online destination and interactive community to
promote better sleep developed for Tylenol PM (McNeil Pharmaceuticals). iSlumber leveraged a unique
combination of behavior change methodology and the JAZZ one-to-one marketing technology. I also developed
custom motion algorithms (mass-spring-damper based physics models) to handle the fluid, realistic animation
behaviors on the site.
 Originally hired to complete a $2 million complete redesign of ADT's website built in Java, JSP, etc., where the
lead developer had left – completed final 1/3 of project with no slip in timeline or budget.

Cornerstone Trading Company, New York, NY Jan 2003 – Jun 2003

Java Programmer (Contract)
 Automated the parsing and conversion of brokerage statements from seven brokerage houses, reconciling them
with the internal database ticket and position information.

Intellishare, White Plains, NY Aug 2000 – Nov 2002

Sr. Application Developer
 Architecture and implementation of a suite of online training software products, that employ an ASP model, to
distribute authoring, administration, and learning tools for simulated on-the-job-training, to business customers.
Developed extensive client-side systems for handling and processing data to greatly reduce load on servers and
increase usability. System used BEA WebLogic Server backend (J2EE), Java Beans, Java Servlet, JSP, and
JavaScript communications middleware. Developed custom classes and APIs. Also involved in design and
execution of UI.

AppliedTheory / Communigrations Group Interactive, City, NY Jan 1997 – July 2000

Senior Developer, Applied Theory Feb 1999 – July 2000
Partner, Sr. Developer, Communigrations Group Interactive Jan 1997 – Feb 1999
** Communigrations Group Interactive purchased by AppliedTheory (a publicly traded Tier 1 provider of Internet
business solutions in 1999).
 Involved in strategy, estimating, architecture, and programming of commercial web development projects for
mid and large sized (Fortune 500) business clients. Responsible for the development and execution of database
driven B-to-B websites (Cold Fusion, Java, JavaScript, Flash), including IA, UI, UX, and design.
 Developed some of the first data driven Flash apps/sites using custom “connectors”.
 Clients/projects included: Time Warner Cable, Carrier, New York State (semi conductor initiative), Welch
Allyn, Niagara Mohawk (Power & Gas), The Da Vinci Project (named a top 10 recruiting site, featured in
Business Week), etc.

The Image Press, Syracuse, NY March 1990 – Sept 1996

Co-Founder, Co-Owner
 Co-founded first digital color pre-press company in Central New York. Zero to $500,000 in annual sales in less
than three years. Sold company to competitors in May of 1996 (and it still exists in 2011).
 Responsibilities included business development/strategy, purchasing, systems integration, calibration of
hardware and software systems, as well as scanning, retouch, digital photo compositing, color separating and
color correction.
