Defence lawyer

Look, if you don’t feel comfortable to talk about this, then it’s fine, they’ll
understand, but by god, please tell the truth. It’s the only way you can
move forward.

Jury
To settle for the courts, held accountable for 2 counts of murder, both in
the city of Atlanta, on the 31st of January 2001, defendant Ray Lewis
you may proceed with your the court hearing.

(Ray stands for the court)

Jury
Before we begin, is there anything you would like to say on the record?

Ray
(says speech about something personal, no one, even audience doesn’t
understand at first)

Jury
(Along the lines of, well if we can get started with the hearing)

Defence Lawyer

(Continues and escalates to the point where it gives in to a back story -

flashback to his childhood)

(Music starts - similar to cold little heart)

Beginning of the scene shows a young Ray Lewis walking through the
streets of Florida, going by the name Ray Jenkins. Walking back home,
establishing shots and wide angle shots used to introduce texts. Ray
arrives home, camera follows him into the house. Sets the scene where
his mother is cooking dinner, and his step father is sat in front on the
sofa in front of the television.

Ray

I’m sorry I’m late ma, I... couch needed me to stay behind and show the
other boys how to…

Step father

Where’s my sorry? You know how long I waited?

Ma

It’s alright Junior…

Step father

No, it’s not alright! I waited in that car park for 45 minutes…

Ma

It’s alright Junior, come and get...

Step Father
Look even your brother made it, and your sister, but where was your
ass? Huh. Look at me - when I’m speaking to you

Ma

(Whilst handing over food on a plate) So how was your day?

Ray

(Still looking at step father)

Step Father

That’s right, look at me boy. Now tell me -

Ma

Ray (Ray turns around) it’s alright, just leave him -

Step Father

- I’m sick and tired of this horseshit -

Ma

- Just keep your eyes on me

Ray turns to face Ma, music cuts, all that is heard is Ray’s deep
breathing.Camera does a front close up on Rays face. Camera then cuts
to a close up on Ma as she says…

Ma

It’s alright, how was your day? (Camera cuts to Ray he says nothing)
Sweetie. (Camera cuts back to Ma) He won’t do anything, I prom-

-Step Father grabs Ray arm and puts a finger to his face. Cuts to Rays
open palm hand.

Step Father

I am done with your shit! From now on, if you live in my house, you
follow my orders. (Raises his arm) You got that?!
Ma interveins and pushes him off of Ray, this angers him and now, his
attention is on Ma.

Ma

Let go of him! He is not yours. You have no right, by god by side, he is

my son and if you dare raise a finger on him, I swear -

Step Father backhands Ma

Step Father

You’ll do what (Ma on the ground, crying) Huh? You’ll get a job? You’ll
pay rent? You’ll take care of this piece of shit?

Camera cuts to Rays hand, now starting to clench, to reveal a trembling

fist.

Because as far as I can see, ain’t none of that happened nor will. If you
want to live here, fine. You want to raise him here, fine. But follow, my,
rules!

Ma still on the ground, crying.

Ma

Yes...Yes! I understand.

Step Father

Know your place woman! And you (Stares back at Ray) What are you
looking at?

Ray’s hands, completely closed, resembling a strong fist, trembling in

fear.
Step Father

Well. Go on (Begins to laugh - Camera cuts between fathers reaction

and his fist) Don’t think I don’t see your tiny ass fist moving about there.
Go on, do it! Hit me.

Tension rises (Music Que) and the question of will he won’t he is further
elevated when SF says…

What are you waiting for? I see that pain of yours. Use it son. Hit me!

Immediate jump cut to current day, court order.

Judge

Did you hit him?

Ray

No (Quietly)

Judge

Did you, hit him?

Ray

No (Loud, and confident)

Judge

Then Mr Lewis, can you explain what happened?

Cuts back to the scene of the punch, mid air, the scene transitions to him
punching a locker in the changing room in school.

Couch enters the room.

Couch

Hey...uh. Great work today Jenkins.

Ray

Thank you sir.

Pause

Couch

I’ve been meaning to ask -

Ray

Yes, sir?

Couch

We’ve hired a new couch for the Football team, and, from what he saw
today, well, he thinks you have what it takes.

Ray

Sir, if you don’t find, I’d rather stick to what I got.

Couch
(Deep sigh) Well, if you ever change your mind Jenkins, I’m here, just
give me a knock on the glass.

Ray

Will do couch.
