Midterm Reflection

This semester at Rocky Mountain High School has been an incredible learning

experience for me. We spent the first quarter of the semester online only and have now been

back in a hybrid model of in person and online for a week. During this time, I have learned so

much, have new ideas of things I want to implement into my own classroom, and have made

connections to the theory discussed in class with the class I am in.

During this semester, I have learned the importance of being flexible and changing things

up in the classroom to fit the current situation, and taking the time to build relationships with

your students. In the first quarter of the semester, the class got in a good routine of logging into

their Google Meet everyday. Now that the students are in a hybrid schedule, the class has had to

be flexible in creating a new routine. This was a huge learning point for me because even though

everything is changing in the classroom now because of COVID-19 regulations, it taught me that

it is important to be flexible and open to change. You never know when something is going to

happen and being open to change can help to show our students how to handle it.

The main thing that I want to implement in my classroom after working with my mentor

teacher is relationship building with students. In mathematics, we often feel pressured to get

through the material, but it is crucial that we take time to build relationships with students. I have

noticed that my mentor teacher has a great relationship with her students, and I believe this to be

because she takes the time out of every class period to ask questions of her students and get to

know them. In building these relationships, I feel that her class has been able to handle these

changes well together because they understand that they can rely on each other.

In the theory portion of EDUC 450, we have talked a lot about classroom management

and different types of assessments. In the class I am in, I have seen some great examples of a

proactive classroom management style. My mentor teacher makes her expectations clear to the

students while still remaining approachable. This has been great to witness because it shows me

that I can have clear and high expectations of my students without scaring them. Also, on each of

the unit tests, the students are given a variety of different question types. In class, we have talked

a lot about assessment types and what kinds of questions to ask on tests. In looking at the tests

the students in class are taking, I can see examples of multiple types of questions being asked

based on what kind of information the teacher is trying to get from that question. This has given

me some ideas of how I can create assessments for my own class.

Even though this semester has been crazy busy with everything changing so often, it has

been a great learning experience for me. I have been able to witness some classroom

management techniques I want to implement in my own classroom, learned how to handle

change with grace, and have made connections with the theory we studied in class.
