The present and future of zoos in big cities around the world

Nowadays, more and more people are concerned about

the way in which animals are kept and taken care of in
zoos. On the one hand, there are some cities which have
come up with innovative projects to modernize zoos and
transform them into more animal-friendly recreational
parks. However, some other cities are evaluating
important ethical and safety issues, especially after a
series of unfortunate events in which both animal and human lives were at risk.

Among the cities that are still in favour of zoos, Philadelphia is a good example. Local
authorities decided to transform the city zoo a few years ago in an effort to minimize stress
and depression for the animals and maximize safety and enjoyment for the visitors. Zoo360,
the name of the zoo’s innovation, is a campus-wide network of walkways and trails where
animals can walk around and above zoo grounds. If you ever visit this place, you will
experience that when you move around the zoo, the zoo moves around you. All the trails and
walkways have special designs to protect both animals and visitors.

In some other big cities around the world, local authorities have changed their views in
connection with city zoos. The impact of a series of tragic incidents at Seattle’s Woodland
Park and at the Buenos Aires Zoo have forced city governments to take extreme measures.
In 2017, many areas at Seattle’s Woodland Park were definitely closed to the public and
some species were placed elsewhere. Similarly, in 2016 the city of Buenos Aires decided to
transform its 140-year-old zoo into an eco-friendly park. Most of the animals in the old city
zoo were moved to nature reserves in Argentina. In this new green area, called Ecopark,
visitors can still be in contact with animals but there are very few of them.
