The children had just finish eating their lunches and assembled in the play and reading
area. I chose Mia for my observation assignment and she is 3 ½ years old. At 1.15pm Mia sat
with the other children and caregivers while they sang the Wheel on the bus goes round and
round. At 1:16pm Mia joined with the group and her language was very clear. She made hand
gestures in a circular motion like wheels just as the caregivers demonstrated. At 1:17pm Mia also
demonstrated body movements by moving her hips from left to right. At 1:19 Mia also tried
mimicking the caregiver uttering swish, swish, swish sounds which represents the sound of the
wiper blades on the bus. At the end of that song exercise everyone clapped their hands including
Mia. At 1.20pm Mia continued clapping her hands while moving her hands up and down. She
also used her hands to tap the rhythm of the song the wheel on the bus on her legs while showing
a smiley face.
At 1.22pm the caregiver introduced a reading book with pictures and asked the children
to identify the different objects. At 1:23 Mia sat the closest to the caregiver with the book and
she was very focused, trying to identify one of the object. At 1:24pm Mia was able to point at the
object she knew and called it by name clearly. Mia repeated the name of the object twice by
saying “It’s a pumpkin, it’s a pumpkin”. Mia got high 5 from caregivers and stood up and leaped
from the ground three times. The caregivers introduced another song, they sang heads shoulders
knees and toes. At 1:25pm Mia did not take participate in the activity she leaned herself against
the wall hanging her head down and call the caregiver mommy .Mia repeated mommy twice
before making an attempt to participate. At 1:27pm Mia started watching the other children
making an attempt while she shook her legs back and forth to the tune of the song.
At 1:28pm Mia was placed at a circular table with other children and was given a colored
sheet of cartridge paper by the care giver. At 1:29 Mia began hitting the paper with both hands
for approximately 10 seconds while rocking her upper body left and right and back and forth.
The caregiver gave Mia small pieces of paper with glue to paste to the larger paper. Mia paused
for about 5 seconds while watching the others doing the exercise. At 1:30pm Mia took the small
pieces of paper and glue them to the surface given to her. At 1:32pm Mia took the large piece of
paper and held the top of the paper with her thumb and her index finger and tore the paper all the
way to the end. At 1:33pm Mia continued tearing the paper the same way she started Mia
continued for about 5 seconds. At 1:35pm Mia started imitating the caregivers by saying ‘Good
job guys, good job. At 1:37 Mia received multi-color loose tools from the caregivers she started
moving her head from left to right uttering “No, no, no”. I want the blue and red ones.
At 1:38pm the caregiver asked Mia if she wanted to use other loose tools Mia nodded her
head up and down three times then the she uttered yes. At 1:39pm Mia started yelling “I want to
pee, its coming down. I want to pee hurry, hurry”. At 1:43pm Mia came running from the
washroom while trying to pull her zipper up while heading towards the toy room. She was seen
climbing on a chair to get into a toy box, she put her right foot over first but she was unbalance
as the box was shaking. At 1:44 Mia paused to balance herself then she put over her left foot and
jumped in to box. At 1:45pm Mia shouted a happy scream “ I did it, I did it, I did it.
