V. Course Overview
This course is designed to provide participants with:
opportunities to sharpen their listening skills via lectures, presentations, panel discussions, and
authentic BBC documentaries,
opportunities to practice speaking about academic topics, with pair and group work, to prepare for
future academic discussions.

VII. Course Goals (CG)
This course has three overall goals: to educate students who are able to:
CG1: Gain fundamental knowledge of listening and speaking skills as well as common social and
academic issues at B1 level
CG2: Practise listening and speaking in simulated real-life academic contexts
CG3: Develop essential intellectual and transferable skills and attitudes

Students who fail to take the final exam on one sub-skill (either Listening or Speaking) will not be qualified to pass

students’ listening and speaking abilities at B1 level.

XI. Exam Information


The final exam shall be administered as two separate sub-tests or in two separate shifts (one on Listening and the
other on Speaking) in accordance with the exam schedule prepared by the Faculty or the University. The average score
of these two sub-tests is taken as the final score.

XII. Course Policies
A. Grades
Grade Policy: All grades are public and transparent to all students. Lecturers are required to inform students of their
midterm scores during course time. Any queries about their midterm scores should be raised and answered TWO
WEEKS prior to the lecturer’s submission of the scores to the Faculty Academic Office.
Group Work Policy: All group members are required to take part in a group oral presentation and thus receive the same
score(s) based on the whole group’s performance. Once formed, groups cannot be changed except for cases of students’
extended hospitalization.
B. Technology and Media
Students are encouraged to contact lecturers via email after class hours if they have any queries about the course
contents, lessons, etc. The lecturer’s email address should be provided in the first meeting of the course.
C. Student Expectations
• Attendance will be checked every class meeting either in terms of short quizzes, activity participation or roll calling.
Students who are absent for more than 20% of the total number of class periods [12 periods] will be forbidden
from taking the final examination.
• Penalty for lateness or skipping some periods may vary according to lecturers’ policies.
• Absence should be informed to lecturers before or after the day. Students are responsible for getting the information
they have missed. There are no make-ups for in-class writing, quizzes, the midterm, or the final exam.
• The use of mobile phones and/or laptops for personal purposes without lecturers’ permission is forbidden during
class time.
• Cheating and plagiarism are severely punished.
