INTRODUCTION
Structural Analysis II | Prepared by: Engr. Villamor D. Abad Jr.
INTRODUCTION Structural Analysis II deals mostly with deflections of structures. Different methods in determining the deflections of structures (beams, frames and trusses) will be discussed.

DEFLECTIONS Deflections of structures can occur from various sources: Loads Temperature change Fabrication errors Settlement
In structural design, deflections must be limited in order to
provide integrity and stability of roofs, and prevent cracking of attached brittle materials such as concrete, plaster or glass. Furthermore, a structure must not vibrate or deflect severely in order to “appear” safe for its occupants.

METHODS The following are the list of methods in obtaining deflections: 1. Geometric Methods a. Double Integration Method b. Area Moment Method c. Conjugate Beam Method 2. Work Energy Methods Virtual Work Method 3. Method of Consistent Deformation 4. Three Moment Equation 5. Slope Deflection Method 6. Moment Distribution Method 7. Structural Matrix

Procedure of Analysis 1. Determine the support reactions 2. Choose the reference point – either left to right or right to left. Left to right has a sign conventions of clockwise moment as positive, counterclockwise negative Right to Left rotation has an opposite sign convention.

Procedure of Analysis 3. Pass a cutting section such that all the forces in the beam shall be included in the moment equation. Note: Uniform loads must be end at the cutting sections to avoid discontinuity of the equation. All moment arms must be express in terms of x enclosed with singularity function.
4. Get the summation moment about the
cutting section. Structural Analysis II | Prepared by: Engr. Villamor D. Abad Jr. Procedure of Analysis 5. Integrate the moment equation to obtain the slope equation. 6. Integrate the slope equation to obtain the deflection equation. 7. Evaluate the values of the constant using the boundary conditions of the supports. Note: When evaluating, the expression in the singularity function (pointed bracket) is neglected when it is equal to 0 or negative value. Structural Analysis II | Prepared by: Engr. Villamor D. PROBLEM 3: Analyze the given beam using Double integration Method. Assume EI is constant throughout the span. Determine the following: a. Support reactions. b. Smallest rectangular section of beam to be used if E = 30 GPA and the maximum allowable deflection is 30 mm only. Assume d = 2b. c. Rotation at support B.
