Arithmetic Sequence Assignment

1. Find a formula for the nth term of the arithmetic sequence:

–2, –8, –14, –20, .....
A(n) = -2 + (n - 1) -6
= -2 - 6n + 6
= -6n + 4

2. You visit the Grand Canyon and drop a penny off the edge of a cliff. The
distance the penny will fall is 16 feet the first second, 48 feet the next second,
80 feet the third second, and so on in an arithmetic sequence. What distance
will the penny fall in the sixth second?

A(6) = 16 + (6 - 1) 32
= 16 + 5 (32)
= 16 + 160
= 176 feet

3. You complain that the hot tub in your hotel suite is not hot enough. The hotel
tells you that they will increase the temperature by 10 degrees each hour. If
the current temperature of the hot tub is 75º F, what will be the temperature of
the hot tub after 3 hours?
A(3) = 75 + (3 - 1) 10
= 75 + 2 (10)
= 75 + 20
= 95 degrees farenheit

Arithmetic Sequence Assignment

4. A culture increases by 500 bacteria every 2 hours. If there are 500

bacteria at the beginning, how many bacteria will there by after 24
hours?
24 / 2 = 12 + 1 = 13

Formula: A(n) = A(1) (r)^n-1

A(13) = 500 (2)^13-1

= 500 (2)^12
= 500 (4096)
= 2048000 bacteria

5. What is the next term of the sequence -3, 6, -12, 24,…?

There is no pattern in this sequence as the differences would go as 9, -18, and 36,
which are all different number patterns. If it were arranged as (-12, -3, 6, 24), there would
be a little pattern, but the pattern would go as 9, 9, and 18, which would've been an
arithmetic sequence if it weren't for last number. Now if we add a number between 6 and 24,
the set would go as followed: -12, -3, 6, 15, 24. . . now that's an arithmetic sequence with a
difference of 9. The following term of this set would be 33. But for the stated sequence
above, there is no pattern said.
