Arithmetic Sequence
A SEQUENCE IN WHICH TERM AFTER THE FIRST
TERM IS FORMED BY ADDING A FIXED NUMBER
TO THE PRECEDING TERM.
PROBLEM NO. 1

Tanjay City Science High

School's Auditorium has 20
seats on the first row, 24
seats on the second row, 28
seats on the third row, how
many seats are in the 30th
row?
To find a₃₀ we need the formula for the
sequence and then the substitute n=30. The
formula for an arithmetic sequence is
aₙ = a₁ + (n-1)d

We already know that a₁=20, n=30, and the

common difference, d is 4. So now we have
aₙ = a₁ + (n-1)d
a₃₀ = 20 + (30-1)(4)
a₃₀ = 20 + (29)(4)
a₃₀ = 20 + 116
PROBLEM: HOW MANY SEATS ARE IN
a₃₀ = 136
THE 30TH ROW?

Given: a₁=20, a₂=24, A₃= 28, n= 30 THEREFORE THE 3OTH ROW CONTAINS 136 SEATS
PROBLEM NO. 2

Your PE teacher instructed

you to jog daily for 12
minutes for the first week.
Each week thereafter, your
teacher told you to increase
that time by 6 minutes per
day.
Adding 6 minutes to the weekly jogging
time for each week creates the sequence:
12, 18, 24, ....

This sequence is arithmetic,

aₙ = a₁ + (n-1)d
aₙ = 60 = 12 + ( n - 1)6
n = 9 weeks
PROBLEM: HOW MANY WEEKS WILL IT
BE BEFORE YOU ARE UPTO JOGGING
60 MINUTES PER DAY
THEREFORE IT WILL CHANGE 60 MINUTES PER
Given: a₁ + (n-1)d DAY FOR 9 WEEKS
PROBLEM NO. 3

A writer wrote 890 words

on the first day, 760 words
on the second day and 630
words on the third day, and
so on in an arithmetic
sequence
The sequence is:
890, 760, 630, ....

This sequence is arithmetic,

aₙ = a₁ + (n-1)d n (a₁+a₅)
Sₙ = 2
a₇ = 890- (7-1)130
= 890 (6)130 S₇ = 7 (890+110)
2
= 890- 780 S₇ = 3500
PROBLEM: HOW MANY WORDS DID THE = 110
WRITER WRITE IN A WEEK?

Given: a₁=890, a₂=760, a₃=630 THEREFORE THE WRITER WROTE 3500 WORDS IN
A WEEK
PROBLEM NO. 4

There are 130 students in

grade seven, 210 students in
grade eight and 290
students in nine in a junior
high school to senior high,
and so in an arithmetic
sequence
The sequence is:
130, 210, 290, ....

This sequence is arithmetic,

aₙ = a₁ + (n-1)d n (a₁+a₅)
Sₙ = 2
= 130 + (6-1)80
= 130 (5)80 S₆ = 6 (130+530)
2
= 130 + 400 S₆ = 1980
PROBLEM: WHAT'S THE TOTAL = 530
AMOUNT OF STUDENTS IN THE JUNIOR
HIGH TO SENIOR HIGH
THEREFORE THE TOTAL STUDENTS IN JUNIOR
Given: a₁=130, a₂=210, a₃=290 HIGH SCHOOL TO SENIOR HIGH ARE 1980
PROBLEM NO. 5

My dad's car travels 300m

he first minute, 420 m the
next minute, 540 m the
third minute, and so on in
an arithmetic sequence
The sequence is:
300, 420, 540, ....

This sequence is arithmetic,

aₙ = a₁ + (n-1)d n (a₁+a₅)
Sₙ = 2
a₅ = 300 + (4-1)120
= 300 (4)120 S₅= 6 (130+530)
2
= 300 + 480 S₅ = 1980
PROBLEM: WHAT'S THE TOTAL = 780
DISTANCE THE CAR TRAVELS IN 5
MINUTES?
THEREFORE THE TOTAL STUDENTS IN JUNIOR
Given: a₁=300, a₂=420, a₃=540 HIGH SCHOOL TO SENIOR HIGH ARE 1980
GEOMETRIC SEQUENCE
Geometric sequence is a sequence with common ratio
between two consecutive terms that is constant

PROBLEM NO. 1

A bacterial culture doubles a

number every hour. If one
bacterium is placed in a
glass beaker at 8:00 AM,
how many will be there at
12 midnight?
The sequence is:
1, 2, 4, 8, 16, ...

The sequence is geometric

aₙ = a₁ r ⁿ⁻¹
a₁₇ = 1 (2)¹⁷⁻¹
= 1 (2)¹⁶
Problem: How many bacteria will be there at 12 =1 (65,536)
midnight? a₁₇ = 65,536

Therefore at 12 midnight there will be

65,536 bacteria
PROBLEM NO. 2

Kathren saved 10 pesos

on Sunday and doubled
her savings each
thereafter.
The sequence is:
10, 20, 40 ...

The sequence is geometric

aₙ = a₁ r ⁿ⁻¹ Sₙ = a₁ (1-rⁿ)
1-r
a₇ = 10 (2) ⁷⁻¹ S₇ = 10 (1-2⁷)
= 10 (2)⁶ 1-2
= 10 (1-128)
Problem: How much did she save on the 7th day? =10 (64) -1
What was his total savings for the week? a₇ = 640 = 10 (-127)
-1
= -1,270
-1
s₇ = 1,270
Therefore Kathren's total savings for the
week is 1,270 pesos
PROBLEM NO. 3

Lynch wants to buy Iphone 14

worth 12,000 dollars. If she
plans to save 100 dollars on the
first week, 200 dollars on the
second week, 400 dollars on the
third week, and so on, will she
able to buy the cellphone after
7 weeks?
The sequence is:
100, 200, 400 ...

The sequence is geometric

a₁ (1-rⁿ)
Sₙ = 1-r
S₇ = 100 (1-2⁷)
1-2
S₇ = 100 (1-128)
-1
Problem: How much did she S₇ = 10 (-127)
-1
earn after 7 weeks? s₇ = 12,700

Therefore after 7 weeks Lynch will be able

to save 12, 700. Yes, Lynch will have
enough money to buy the Iphone 14 after 7
weeks
PROBLEM NO. 4

Macquel has 3 pizza stores and

wants to expand his franchise
nationwide. If she doubles the
number of stores that he owns
each month how many stores
will he launch on the 12th
month?
The sequence is geometric
aₙ = a₁ r ⁿ⁻¹
aₙ = 3 (2) ¹²⁻¹
= 3 (2) ¹¹
=3 (2048)
= 6,144

Problem: If she doubles the number of stores that Therefore Macquel will have 6,144 stores on
he owns each month how many stores will he the 12th month
launce on the 12th month?
PROBLEM NO. 5

On June 26 Raissa's troop sold

three boxes of cookies online.
Their daily goal is to sell
double the number of boxes
previous day. At this rate how
many boxes will they sell on
day 7?
The sequence is geometric
aₙ = a₁ r ⁿ⁻¹
aₙ = 3 (2) ⁷⁻¹
= 3 (2)⁶
=3 (64)
=192

Problem: If she doubles the number of stores that Therefore on the 7th day their gonna sell
he owns each month how many stores will he 192 boxes
launce on the 12th month?
