TJILIK RIWUT

Tjilik Riwut (born in Kasongan, February 2, 1918 - died in Banjarmasin, South


Kalimantan, August 17, 1987 at the age of 69 years) is an Indonesian national hero from
Kalimantan. She attended elementary school education, then entered the Nursing School in
Purwakala and Bandung. In 1938, with several colleagues, he founded the Pakat Dayak
organization which aimed to improve the image of the Dayak people.

Not only active in the military sector as a soldier, Tjilik Riwut also played a role in the
government when he was appointed Governor of Central Kalimantan in 1958. Apart from
that, he also contributed in the writing sector, working in various news magazines like
‘Harian Pemandangan’, and wrote several books about Kalimantan such as ‘Makanan
Dayak’, ‘Sejarah Kalimantan’, ‘Maneser Panatau Tatu Hiang’, and ‘Kalimantan
Membangun’.

After independence, he fought with Kalimantan youths in Java. Group after group of
youths was sent to Yogyakarta to move the struggle in Kalimantan. One of the groups was
led by Major Tjilik Riwut. In the City of Waringin, he founded the Emergency Government
of the Republic of Indonesia (PDRI). In several places armed forces were established to carry
out guerrilla warfare against the Dutch. He was involved in battles several times. He also
fought with the heads of the Dayak tribes.
On December 17, 1946, Tjilik Riwut and several representatives of the Dayak tribes in the
interior of Kalimantan, totaling 142 tribes, gathered together to carry out the Oath of Faith to
the government of the Republic of Indonesia with a traditional Dayak tribe ceremony.

Then on 17 October 1947, when he was in Yogyakarta, which was then the capital of the
Indonesian state, he received orders from S. Suryadarma, the head of the Indonesian Air
Force at that time, to lead the first Umbrella Troop Operation by MN 1001 troops in Sambi
village. , Kotawaringin, Central Kalimantan. In this operation, Tjilik Riwut was responsible
for being a guide for the team, which consisted of 13 people (11 people from Kalimantan and
2 from Java). To commemorate this important event in the history of the Indonesian Armed
Forces, October 17 was officially designated as TNI-AU Special Forces Day.

After the War of Independence ended, he was appointed as Wedana Sampit, then Regent
of Kotawaringin, and finally Governor of Central Kalimantan. He contributed to building
Palangkaraya as the capital of Central Kalimantan. As governor, he succeeded in improving
welfare and advancing the education of the people of Central Kalimantan. He has also served
as a member of the DPR and DPA. Air Force awarded him the rank of Honorary First
Admiral (Marshal) for his services within the Air Force.

During the reign of B.J. Habibie. His name is immortalized as one of the airports in
Palangka Raya. Tjilik Riwut passed away on August 17, 1987. By the Indonesian government
he was awarded the title of National Hero on November 6, 1998 with the issuance of
Presidential Decree No. 108 / TK / 1998.
