 Construction/Building

Preassessment and Findings:

Preassessment on construction:

During snack, I preassessed many of the children about construction.  I put on a hard hat and asked the children what it
was, most of the children said it was a construction or hard hat, but Maverick and Dawson thought it was a firefighter
hat.  When I asked the children what it was for, Addison and Benton said it was, so you don’t get hurt.  Ella, Link, and
Leslie became very animated when I brought up the topic of construction and told me about the construction toys and
tools they play with at home.  Many children showed interest when I brought out a few small blocks. William grabbed
them and started to build right away.  I asked the children to tell me what things they thought I could build with the blocks I
had.  Several children said “house”, two said “rainbow” (there was a rainbow block) and Link and one other child said a
road.  None of the children mentioned bridges, towers, or enclosures, but Emri did begin to use the blocks to build an
enclosure.  She made 2 sides and a little of a third and then stopped as if stumped.  After they each had an opportunity to
respond I used the blocks to build a bridge.  I asked them what it was called, Link was sure it was just a road and
Dawson thought it might be a house.  The majority of the children, including Link, Addison, Dawson, Benton, Maverick,
and William were unsuccessful at naming the bridge. Only Leslie was able to eventually name the bridge.

Why Do I need gloves? To protect my hands
and so on. Once I get everything on I will ask
the children who I am dressed up as. Explain
that I am dressed up as a construction worker
as we build things like buildings, houses and
bridges.
Script: Why do we need to build bridges?
Right, they help us go over things. What are
some things we build bridges over to help us
get over them? Water, roads, dirt, sidewalks.
Here is a picture of a bridge, what are they
using this bridge to help get over, what is
under this bridge? (show 4 pictures) We have
a bridge at our school, should we go see it?
Let’s quietly get on our coats and go for a walk
to see if we can find a bridge outside. 
Intentional Teaching About Activity –
Children are getting a real experience seeing a
bridge after learning why we need bridges. 
Activity: As a group we will walk to the
sky bridge at the Manwaring Center. We
will use our flag that we made at the art
center and put it in the snow under the
bridge as a marker of where we were
standing.
Idea to be Emphasized: We build bridges
to help us go over things like water,
