Cleanliness: What is wrong with Malaysians?

January 2019: Marie Kondo, a Japanese organising consultant and author in her famous
maxim said, “The objective of cleaning is not just to clean, but to feel happiness living within
that environment.” All religions propagate and teach their followers to practise cleanliness. But
it seems we are still far behind in terms of cleanliness compared to other countries. Just have
a peek at our public toilets and objectively evaluate the level of cleanliness in the streets and
at home. We are now in 2019, not 1919, but our standard of cleanliness leaves much to be
desired. Our mindsets have not changed much despite great efforts by various quarters to
make us value cleanliness. Despite being just one year shy of 2020, the target year of being
a developed nation, some things never change in Malaysia – in this case, cleanliness among
its citizens. -Opinion Letter by Dr Jeniri Amir-,
(Adapted from New Sarawak Tribune)

Give your opinion on the issue based on the Islamic perspective on cleanliness. You may
justify your answer with relevant supporting details. (3 Minutes)

Malaysian rock band stand by anti-LGBT lyrics despite accusations of homophobia

March 2020: Malaysian rock band Bunkface have defended their new song, Akhir Zaman
(“The End of Times”), which has caused controversy over lyrics that urge the LGBT community
to “go and die”. One line in the song targeted the gay community – “LGBT boleh pergi
mampus” (“LGBT can go and die”). In the press release, written in both Bahasa Malaysia and
English, defended the anti-LGBT lyric. It said the band were not targeting specific individuals
but criticising the growing Muslim LGBT movement in Malaysia. In the statement, they
indicated their rejection of any rights for LGBT Muslims.
The release of Akhir Zaman comes amid a rise in hate speech and violence against
the LGBT community in Malaysia. Last year the country saw a string of murders of trans
women, while five men were jailed and caned for gay sex crimes.

Give your opinion on the issue. Is it right for the band to put the line “LGBT can go and die” in
their lyric in order to criticise the Muslim LGBT movement in our country? How do we deal with
LGBT Muslims? You may justify your answer with relevant supporting details. (3 Minutes)

the whole year display extraordinary will power for 30 days by abstaining from them during the
fasting period. And because we need to restrain our senses, they become hyper-active from

Muslim’s awareness is a great power that can exert the required force to authorities and the
manufacturers of halal food products. As a Muslim, understanding and vigilance regarding
halal and haram concept is essential, we cannot simply depend on the authority. For example,
Muslim consumers should take note of the content and ingredient of their food or any products
when they shop. They also should be aware of the processing method, whether it follows
shari’ah compliance or not. However, this is not always true in our society, as can be seen in
the prompt above. Discuss the halal food awareness among our fellow Muslims with
examples. (3 Minutes)
