MEAN OF DICRETE PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTION
The mean or the expected value of a random n(M) f P(M)
variable in a discrete probability distribution is 3 1 0.125
defined by the sum of the product of the values of
2 3 0.375
random variable and its corresponding
probability. 1 3 0.375

𝜇 = ෍ 𝑛 𝑀 ⋅ 𝑃(𝑀) Total 8 1

Where: 𝜇 = ෍ 𝑛 𝑀 ⋅ 𝑃(𝑀)
𝑛(𝑀) is the value of random variable
𝜇 = 3 ⋅ 0.125 + 2 ⋅ 0.375 + 1 ⋅ 0.375 + 0 ⋅ 0.125

Take note: The standard deviation is just
the square root of the variance. 𝜎2 = ෍ 𝑛 𝑀 2 ⋅𝑃 𝑥 − 𝜇2 𝜎= ෍𝑛 𝑀 2 ⋅𝑃 𝑥 − 𝜇2

𝜎= 𝜎2 𝜎 2 = 3 − 1.5 2
