Assessment 2: Divine Command Theory

1. According to the discussion, how does a person who believes in the Divine Command
Theory see morality? Give examples. Base sa ating pinag-usapan, paano naiintidihan ng
isang taong naniniwala sa Divine Command Theory ang moralidad? Magbigay ng
halimabawa.

The Divine Command Theory states that the basis of morality is what God commands as
right or wrong. A person has a will to do everything he/she wants. However, if this person
believes in the Divine Command theory, his/her basis of actions will depend on God’s teachings
on what is the right thing to do despite any situation even if he/she will not be happy, as long as
the person has fulfilled God’s commands. This person will believe that the suffering of doing
what’s right will outweigh the satisfaction of following one’s own desires since in the afterlife,
one will be rewarded. For instance, a student who is enrolled in an online class will take a major
exam without reviewing since she was busy doing her responsibilities as a daughter or sister at
home. She has the choice to cheat in order to pass the exam since no one will know about it, yet
she chooses to take the exam without cheating even if she knows she will fail. She chose to do
the right thing because it is what God thinks as right. No one will have the satisfaction in failing,
but it is still rewarding since she has fulfilled God’s commands. This is how one sees morality if
one believes in the Divine Command Theory.

2. Do you think that DCT still makes sense in our modern world where the source of
morality can be determined in many ways e.g. through social media? Sa iyong pananaw, may
saysay pa ba ang DCT sa modernong panahon kung saan ang pagtukoy sa tama at mali ay
nanggagaling sa napakaraming bagay tulad ng social media.

A lot of people particularly teenagers align their choices depending on the trends in the
social media. By means of social media, they have the courage to stand for what is right, or
maybe what they perceive as right. In spite of this kind of situation, I believe that the Divine
Command Theory will still makes sense in this modern world for the reason that most people
still believe in religion. As one who grew up from a religious family, I still depend my choices
on what the Bible has taught us. Yes, I may have been spending hours scanning through social
media, but I believe that what social media show people are not always the right things, and they
are full of filters. Social media show people what perfection is, but there is no perfection in
human life, and there will never be. People must know that the pursuit of happiness by owning
everything will lead to nowhere. If people will want to pursue happiness, one must follow God’s
commands. Thus, even in this modern world, morality is and will also be based on the teachings
of God. And yes, the Divine Command Theory will still matter and becomes more important
during this generation.
