Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on the properties and abilities of debris as a partial substitute on
aggregates for the compressive strength of load bearing concrete hollow block. The
other components in making hollow block are not within the scope of this experiment.
By doing the study will be able to know if debris can be substitute on aggregates for
making concrete hallow block and could the debris increase the compressive strength of
load bearing concrete hollow block. The sizes of the moldings of blocks used are
4”x8”x16” with the nominal measurements of 8 inches (20.32 cm) high by 4 inches
(10.16 cm) deep by 16 inches (40.64 cm) wide. And the measurements of cell blocks
are 4”x3” inches with nominal measurements of 4 inches (10.16 cm) wide by 3 inches
(7.62 cm) deep. There were 5 samples cast in each set. The concrete mixture used in
CHB casting of the control specimen is 1:5 (cement:debris). To attain the 3.1 MPa
compressive strength of the concrete mix, 0.45 water cement ratio was used. Due to
time constraint, the curing period was 14 days for all samples and the method used is
sprinkling. Discarded debris were taken from the demolition along Poblacion Street,
Jaen City. For the commercial CHB, samples were taken from the Homesite Hardware.
Scope and Limitations of the Study

The properties and abilities of debris as a partial aggregate substitute for the
compressive strength of load bearing concrete hollow block are the focus of this
research. The other materials used to make hollow blocks are outside the scope of this
experiment. By performing the research, it would be able to determine whether debris
can be used to substitute aggregates in the construction of concrete hollow blocks and
whether debris will improve the compressive strength of load bearing concrete hollow
blocks. The block moldings used are 4”x8”x16” in scale, with nominal dimensions of 8
inches (20.32 cm) high, 4 inches (10.16 cm) deep, and 16 inches (40.64 cm) wide. Cell
blocks are 4”x3” inches in bulk, with nominal dimensions of 4 inches (10.16 cm) wide
and 3 inches (7.62 cm) deep. In each set, five samples were cast. In the CHB casting of
the control specimen, a 1:5 concrete mixture was used (cement:debris). The concrete
mixture was produced with a 0.45 water cement ratio to attain a compressive strength of
3.1 MPa. The curing duration for all samples was 14 days due to time restraints, and the
process used was sprinkling. The demolition debris was found along Poblacion Street in
Jaen Area. Homesite Hardware samples were used to make the commercial CHB.
