SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE

Common tense markers:

 every day, week, month, night, year, summer


 these days, nowadays, always, all the time
 most of the time, never, often, rarely, sometimes, usually

THE USE OF SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE:

1. Simple Present Tense is used to talk about habits and repeated (regular) actions.

Examples:

 She gets up early in the mornings.


 The child drinks milk every day.
 She goes to school by taxi.
 Sukro always listens to slow music.
 I don’t like candies.
 Madun usually comes to the office on foot.
 He eats breakfast every day.
 They never write letter to me.
 Tom brushes his teeth twice a day.
 The shops opens at 8 o’clock in the morning.
 Nowadays, almost all of the children spend most of their day in front of television.

2. Simple Present Tense is used to talk about general truths or scientific facts.

Examples:

 The sun rises in the east and sets in the west.


 It never snows in summer.
 Water boils at 100 o C.
 Water freezes at zero centigrade degree.
 A cat has four legs.
 Four minus one is three.
 Yogyakarta is in Indonesia.

3. Simple Present Tense is used to talk about arranged or scheduled programs in the future.

Examples:

 The examination starts at 9:30 tomorrow.


 The bus leaves at 08:00 am on Mondays.
 The train leaves for Bandung at 10:00 pm.
 The lesson starts at nine every day.
 The plane leaves at 10:30 in the evening.
 My brother comes tomorrow.
 The bus goes at half past 5 pm.
 The program starts every day at 10:30 am on weekdays.
 The festival starts on June 14th and closes on July 15th.
4. Simple Present Tense is used for instantaneous situations (like sports commentaries)

Examples:

 Messi passes the ball to Neymar.


 Sammy maintains his lead over the other runners.

5. We can use simple present tense when telling stories.

Examples:

 Spiderman jumps into the building and saves the child. Suddenly, the monster appears.

6. Simple Present Tense is also used to give directions and instructions

Examples:

 Go straight along the road and turn left at the corner.


 Put the flour into a large container and mix with milk.
 First, break the eggs and stir with sugar.

7. Simple Present Tense is also used in ceremonial and formal conversations.

Examples:

 I name this ship as ‘Rainbow’.


 I pronounce you man and wife.
 I invite the president to the stage.
 I hereby appoint you as my lawyer.

8. Newspaper headlines usually are expressed in simple present tense.

Examples:

 PEACE TALKS FAIL


 CYCLONE HITS INDIA
 MAN ENTERS SPACE
 TITANIC SINKS

9. Simple present tense is also used to talk about the future with time words: after, when, before, as
soon as, until.

Examples:

 I will call you before I leave.


 Teachers will announce when students come to the school.
 Jack will buy a mobile phone after he arrives in Canada.
 You must wait here until your father comes.
