9. Course Learning At the end of this course students will be able to:
Outcomes 1. Explain aspects of phonetics and phonology in English.

2. Produce the correct articulation, description and transcription of phonemes in the
English Sound System. (C6, PLO2, PLO4, CS2)
3. Analyse the structure of syllables, patterns of stress and intonation, and features of
connected speech in the English Language using standard terminology. (C4, PLO3,
CTPS1)
4. Write a report (in groups) based on an analysis of transcribed data of a sample’s (non-
native speaker of English) segmental or supra-segmental aspects of pronunciation
errors and causes for the errors with evidence from the literature (C6, A2, PLO3,
PLO5, CTPS5, TS4)
5. Write the solutions to address the pronunciation problems identified with evidence
from the literature.(C6, A2, PLO3, PLO6, CTPS5, LL2)

12. Synopsis This course focuses on an overview of English phonetics and phonology, English consonants,
English vowels, the syllable, stress patterns, intonation, aspects of connected speech and
practice in spoken discourse: pronunciation and transcription.
