 A RAISIN IN THE SUN

SUMMARY:
The Zoyas found 10K worth of money stashed inside Mr. Zoya’s bag after
they ran away from their country’s border. Unfortunately, Mr. Zoya did not make it.
The officers caught him while he tried his best to run ; leaving his family behind.
When the Zoyas arrived in Namkanda, they intended to start a new life there.

But, problems arise when each one of them have different opinions on how
they will use the money because of their individual dreams. At that time, Annika also
found out that she’s pregnant. But it is not all sunshine and rainbows as one day
Valter's friend ran away with all of the money invested in Valter's dream liquor
store,which turned to another problem where the Zoyas were caught red-handed by
the police that they are refugees known as the Sla0

vs.

They are finally given a chance to live in Namkanda when Benedict assures
the locals that the Slavs are good people and to give them a chance to live there.
The Zoyas did not waste that chance as they stayed true to their words and lived
harmoniously with the locals.

 ACT I
SCENE I

A dark room in an abandoned house in Chesterville, Namkanda. Bedroom furniture

in bad condition. MAMA ZOYA, VALTER, LELYA, ANNIKA and BORIS lay on a mat
at centre stage. The light is gradually brightened.

MAMA ZOYA :[Sits up and lightly slaps VALTER, LELYA and ANNIKA’S
faces] Get up. We have to check our belongings. [Shushes
them and points at a sleeping Boris]

VALTER : [Frowns sadly] Dad…

MAMA ZOYA : [Sadly] He’s dead. They caught him, remember? [Sniffles]
Now, wake up! This is our reality. Life goes on, let’s live on.

LELYA : [Looks at a brown bag in the corner] Time to look at what he

brought for us. [Pulls out stacks of money and dramatically
looks at Mama Zoya] Mama, where did dad get this?

MAMA ZOYA : All of them are from your dad’s hard work [stares blankly] Our
country is always in chaos because of the war, now we have
to become [hesitates for a second] “immigrants” in another
country.

BORIS : [Sits up and rubs eyes] Don’t worry, grandma. It’s all fine
now.

Lights turn off.

 ACT I
SCENE II

A dark dining room. A small table and four chairs on centre stage. MAMA ZOYA,
ANNIKA and VALTER sit at the table. LELYAH enters stage from up-right and sits. A
brighter light is focused on the money on the table.

LELYAH : Mama, when can we convert these ten grand Slavs into
Namkanda’s currency?

MAMA ZOYA : Hold on, my dear. I’ll have to find the perfect time. We can’t let
the people know we’re Slavs.

VALTER : [Coughs] Mama… Um… [Hesitates for a moment] Could I

use it..to...open...a liquor store?

LELYAH : [Angrily] Wait, what?! You want to use the money to start a
liquor business? Just where on earth did you get the idea?

Red light is gradually intensified.

VALTER : Yes, what’s the problem with that?!

MAMA ZOYA : No, Valter. We’re not business people.

LELYAH : And I want to pursue my dream to be a doctor! At least it’s

nobler than yours!

VALTER : God! Why don’t you trust me? Having a stable income is more
important!

LELYAH : Dad didn’t give us the money to open your God damn
“dream” liquor store!
VALTER : [Through gritted teeth] I can’t handle this.

VALTER exits from left-centre. LELYAH stomps and exits from right-centre. Red light
is turned off. The stage is fully lit.

ANNIKA : Mama Zoya, you know what?

MAMA ZOYA : [Hums in question] Hmm?

ANNIKA : The other day, I saw Lelyah at Orlando Park. With a man!

MAMA ZOYA : [Excitedly] Really? Who is the mystery man?

ANNIKA : I don’t know who it is. But I think it’s the officer, Benedict.

MAMA ZOYA : Oh, dear. I really hope Lelyah will be with Benedict. Of
course I will allow their relationship. He’s rich! Filthy rich!

ANNIKA : Is he, Mama? [eyes wide open]

MAMA ZOYA :Yes! If Lelyah marries Benedict, she could pursue her
ambition to become a doctor. [Exclaiming in awe] We also can
get Namkanda’s citizenship!

ANNIKA : Oh, that would be a great life… [pauses] Umm… I meant,

lucky her! [Pauses] I’m getting a drink.

ANNIKA stands up, walks slowly from the centre to centre-left then falls down.
MAMA ZOYA rushes to ANNIKA.

MAMA ZOYA : [Holding Annika] Annika! Oh dear! [Shouts] Lelyah!

BORIS and LELYAH enter from the upper-left stage, gasps, carries ANNIKA and
leaves to the upper-left stage.
MAMA ZOYA returns to the table and sits down. VALTER enters from the upper-right
stage.
VALTER : [Sighs and sits on a chair] Just got a job to scoop cow dung
at a nearby farm. It’s not much but it’s honest work and - [Gets
interrupted]

LELYAH runs on stage from upper-left.

MAMA ZOYA : [Quickly stands up] What is it?

LELYAH : [Looks at Valter] Annika’s pregnant.

VALTER : [Shocked] What?

All stage lights are turned off. Curtain closes.

 ACT II
SCENE I

Living room. VALTER and LELYAH hold ANNIKA to walk from upper-right to the
center. MAMA ZOYA and BORIS are sitting down on the couch of the living room.

MAMA ZOYA : [Quickly stands up] Annika… My dear…

BORIS : Mama… You okay already?

ANNIKA just nods and hums.

VALTER : Boris, bring your mama to the bedroom along with Lelyah, will
ya?

BORIS : Okay, papa.

As LELYAH and BORIS help ANNIKA to the upper-left, VALTER sits down on the
couch with MAMA ZOYA.

VALTER : [Sighs] Mama…

MAMA ZOYA : Yes?

VALTER : I’m worried, Mama. Annika’s pregnant. That means our cost is
expanding, Mama. My job at the farm wouldn’t be enough to
support the family. Let alone a new baby. Diapers, milk, our
groceries… Lord!

A few minutes of silence pass with MAMA ZOYA and VALTER in the living room.
VALTER then breaks the silence by coughing.

VALTER : Mama… Can you consider giving me some money to open a

liquor store? I know we’re not business people like you said,
but I really really believe I can help our family with it.
MAMA ZOYA : [Hesitates] Umm…

VALTER : Mama, please… When I get the profits, I’ll open a flower shop
for you. You want that, right Mama? Please… I promise.

MAMA ZOYA pauses for a while.

(Aside)
MAMA ZOYA : It’s not wrong to give some to Valter, right? I mean, Lelyah will
marry Benedict. Lelyah can ask from Benedict. Besides, I still
have a few thousand left.

MAMA ZOYA faces VALTER.

MAMA ZOYA : Okay, I’ll give some to you. But promise me, leave a few
thousands untouched.

VALTER : [Face lights up] Really, Mama? Oh, thank you, Mama! Thank
you!

VALTER stands up and exits to upper-right. All lights are off for a few minutes.

MAMA ZOYA is sitting on the couch of the living room. ANNIKA comes out of the
upper-left and sees VALTER coming in the apartment at the door, looking gloomy.

ANNIKA : Valter?

VALTER ignores ANNIKA, goes straight to MAMA ZOYA and kneels.

VALTER : Mama, I’m sorry. [Starts to shed tears] I’m sorry…

MAMA ZOYA : [Clueless] Valter, my dear. Why? What happened?

VALTER : Mama, please don’t be mad at me. The liquor store, the one
that I invested with my friend- is a scam! He ran away with the
money! I mean- all of the money, Mama. I didn’t save some
for you. [Cries] I’m sorry!
ANNIKA : [Interrupts] Valter, what do you-

VALTER :[Continues] And- Because- I was angry. He lied. He- He

betrayed me. I was so angry. So, I went straight to the police. I
reported it to them. But, when the police asked for my ID, I- I-
[Starts to bawl] I’m sorry, Mama! Now, the police know we’re
not from Namkanda. I didn’t mean to expose us. I was just so
angry at him. But I didn’t think about it thoroughly before going
to the police.

ANNIKA froze at her place where she stands and MAMA ZOYA did not say anything,
just looking at VALTER kneeling.

All stage lights are turned off. Curtain closes.

 ACT II
SCENE II

MAMA ZOYA, ANNIKA and BORIS are sitting at a bench in a police station. VALTER
comes from upper-left and sits down with them.

VALTER : They’re mad. The police officers said we Slavs- are vicious.
Violent.

BORIS : But, we’re not. Right, Papa?

VALTER : No, boy. So, they proposed to us. They offer money to go to
another country. But, I said no. We can’t move again. Annika
will give birth in a few months. We need to find a place to live.
I need to find a new job. [Looks down to the floor and cover
his face] Where- where is Lel-

LELYAH and BENEDICT emerge from the upper-right.

BENEDICT : Hello.

LELYAH : Mama, this is Benedict. Ummm… He’s a-a..close friend.

BENEDICT smiles at LELYAH.

BENEDICT : Well, I knew Lelyah for a while now. And, I can say Slavs are
not bad people. I have the proof right here next to me.

LELYAH blushes.

BENEDICT : I will try to talk to the higher-ups. I will assure them that you
are not bad as they thought. And, I will help all of you to stay
here in Namkanda.

MAMA ZOYA lights up and smiles back to BENEDICT.

BENEDICT : But on one condition.

MAMA ZOYA, LELYAH, VALTER, ANNIKA and BORIS look at BENEDICT curiously.

LELYAH : What condition?

BENEDICT : [Talks straight to MAMA ZOYA] I marry Lelyah.

LELYAH : [Surprised] Huh?

Lights turn off.

 ACT II
SCENE III

Police station. Gloomy atmosphere. A large table and two chairs at the centre stage.
MAMA ZOYA and ANNIKA sit on the chairs. The rest of the ZOYAS sit on the floor at
the centre.

LELYAH : [grabs MAMA’s hand] Are you okay, Mama? Your hands are cold.

MAMA : Yes, I am okay. Maybe, it has been a long time since I’ve been to a
crowded place like this. [Gives an unsettling smile]

BENEDICT : Rest assured, Mama. Remember, you are not alone. I will fight for
this family because being together with Lelyah is enough evidence of
your kindness. [Winks at LELYAH]

VALTER : Uhmm...I don’t want to ruin the mood but is it necessary to bring all
the family members here?

ANNIKA : Well, if you think that you can survive on your own, still dreaming to
find ways to achieve your liquor business despite being scammed and
become the main reason why all of us are here. Then you are
welcome to go [shrugged her shoulders] or is being scammed once is
not enough to snap you back to reality?

VALTER remains quiet. He knows that it is his fault that everything ended up like
this.

BENEDICT :Hold up you two, please refrain from creating any unwanted family
war in the police office. Our place is too small for that. [Chuckles]. Well
Valter, yes. It is necessary to bring all of the family members to make
our job easier. Also, Annika, look on the bright side, you are finally
here to end all of your miseries running away from the lights right?
You should be thankful for Valter [Smiles]

ANNIKA :[Hesitates] Well that’s one thing for sure so thanks, I mean it.
VALTER looks at ANNIKA in disbelief and later smiles warmly.

BENEDICT :[Yelling] All officers, please come to the meeting room now!

Benedict leaves from the upper-left stage. Ticking sounds. Benedict enters from the
upper-left stage.

BENEDICT : Congratulations! Your refugee status has been approved. Welcome

to Namkanda and don't worry anymore, you are all under our
protection!

Curtain closes.
 ACT III
SCENE I

Clybourne Park. Sunset. LELYAH hurriedly enters from the upper-left stage to
centre.

LELYAH : [In a panic] Benedict! Why did you call me here?

Cricket noises.

LELYAH :[Shaking] Sweetheart, where are you?

Benedict enters from the upper-right stage.

BENEDICT : I’m here, love.

LELYAH turns around. BENEDICT gets on one knee. Light focuses on LELYAH and
BENEDICT.

BENEDICT : Me plus you, together forever? How does that sound to you? Uhm, I
got down on one knee for you, and whether you say “yes” or... “yes”
[winks] I'm going to need your help getting back up. And since I’m a
well-known police officer so would you “po-lice” spend the rest of your
life with me? [Laughs nervously]
LELYAH : [Excitedly] My answer is yes and yes and yes! [Hugs Benedict] I
thought something happened to you! [Hits Benedict gently]
BENEDICT : [Laughing] So, is this happily ever after?
LELYAH : I think I can safely say it is.

All lights turn off.
