Writing Task 2 Expert IELTS-6

Module 4

Vadim Drokin
You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write an essay of at least 250 words on the topic below:

Some people think that studying a practical subject such as science or

technology is more relevant nowadays for young people’s career
prospects than studying the arts. Others think that the arts are more
important.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Nowadays, there are many points of view about which skills and
subjects are more important and relevant for the career of young people.
People have different views on what choices students should have about
what they can study at school and university. While some argue that it
would be better if students were forced to pursue particular subject
areas, while others believe that they should learn more about arts.

For many people, the choice of university and faculty comes from the
fact that they want to study more, for example, if a person wants to
become an engineer, he will directly go to the faculty of engineering
where he will receive an accurate set of knowledge about this field. The
modern generation without enthusiasm study what they do not need in
life, especially art and other non-practical subjects. This is quite obvious
and understandable, people want to study something that will absolutely
give practical benefits in the future, a large salary, career prospects, level
of professionalism and more. The world is coming to the point that any
engineer or plumber earns as much or more than the average art critic.

Art and literature were considered extremely important subjects in the

past, but today this has changed. While the benefits of more graduates in
these kinds of useful subjects are clear, I believe that it would be a
mistake to only allow students to study these subjects. This is because
society is not able to accurately predict the future and what kinds of
skills that people will need for jobs. For example, there may be entirely
new fields created that need a strong artistic ability and solid writing
skills. If students are only trained to be good scientists or engineers, they
may not be able to succeed in these new fields.
I sincerely believe that a person should be versatile and know the basics
of each fundamental subject, this will help in all areas of life. The school
just helps with this. At the same time, I am absolutely sure that people
should study only the subjects necessary for their future profession at the
university.
In conclusion, while it may seem reasonable to force students to study
subjects that are currently considered useful, I believe that giving
students the opportunity to choose what they study will be the best
option for our society.
