Suppl. Draw:

This document is valid for the following engine types:

S46MC-C, S50MC-C.

This MAN B&W Production Recommendation should be regarded as a guideline. Further

design details are to be taken from the drawing fro the actual plant concerned.

Contents

1. Preparing for mounting the main chains

2. Mounting the main chains
3. Assembling the chain
4. Adjusting the chain tightener
5. Rivetting and marking the chains

1. Preparing for mounting the main chains

1.1 Turn the crankthrow for cylinder No. 1 to TDC.

1.2 Make a mark on the top tooth of the chain wheel on the crankshaft.

1.3 Turn the crankthrow for cylinder No. 1 in AHEAD direction to the position shown
on the relevant drawing for arr. of moment compensator "aft" for, respectively, 4, 5
and 6 cylinder engines.

After turning the desired number of degrees, count how many teeth there are from
the marked one to the tooth that is now in top position.

1.4 Turn/adjust the camshaft fuel cam No. 1 in accordance with the "valve opening
diagram".

Make a mark on the top tooth of the chain wheel on the camshaft, and turn the
camshaft relative to the crankshaft.

Strap down the camshaft in this position, by means of tackles (see Fig.1).

Figure 1

1.5 Lock the flyweights in the bottom position with the special locking tools mounted
through the holes in the end cover (see Fig.2).

Figure 2

1.6 Ensure that the chain tightener is loose.

Lift up the chain tightener, using a tackle.

This has to be done before mounting the chains.

1.7 Mount chain guides in the bottom of the centre flyweight to guide the chains when
mounting (see Fig.3).

Figure 3

1.8 Mount chain guides on top of the exh. side flyweight to guide the chains when
mounting (see Fig.4).

2. Mounting the main chains

2.1 Check the right direction/matching and number of chain links in accordance with
the drawing.

The matching number are marked on the side plates of the outer link nearest to the
connecting link. On the same link there is an arrow (→) which indicates the
mounting rotation direction.

2.2 Using a rope, measure for hooking-on and suitable positioning of chain assembly in
exhaust side, the length of the chain, down to the chain tightener (approx. 2-3 chain
links below chain tightener) (see Fig.5).

chain drive upper part (see Fig.6).

3. Assembling the chain

3.1 Protect the link rollers - over which the wire rope will be wrapped - against friction
from the wire.

Lash a thin wire round the link rollers, a short distance from the connecting links.

Assemble the chains by means of tackle, and mount the connecting links from the
middle between the chains, towards fore and aft (see Fig.7).

Figure 7

Mount sideplates on the connecting links (see Fig.8).

Figure 8

3.2 Loosen and remove the tackle from the chain tightener.

Remove all the fixing equipment, sliding ramp, tackles, etc. from the engine.

3.3 Mount the lowest beam for guide bar complete, and insert and tighten screws.

3.4 Tighten the chain and check the engine adjustment in accordance with drawing.

Check that the flyweights point vertically downwards (max. deviation one-half
chainwheel tooth pitch).

Note! To facilitate remounting of chain at yard before turning, paint two teeth
and one chain pin on each chain wheel with different colours.

4. Adjusting the chain tightener

Tighten the chains according to drawing "Adjustment of chain tightener".

5. Rivetting and marking the chains

5.1 Turn the connecting link to the top of the chain wheel on the camshaft.

5.2 Secure the connecting link by rivetting each chain pin end in four places (see
Fig.9).

Figure 9

5.3 Mark the chain links in accordance with the drawing, paint three links (connecting
links and one link on each side, to make them easier to find).

5.4 Note! Connecting links may only be used once.
