PPE 309L: PROCESS ENGINEERING COMPUTING Date: 4-Feb-2021
Semester: Fifth Due Date: 11-Feb-2021
Assignment: 5 Total Marks: 10
Session: 2018

Instructions
All students please follow these guidelines for presentation and submission of assignments.

- Your name on each page of the assignment (e.g. in the footer)

- Title of the assignment

- Assignment number

- Page numbering

2. Preferred format - Word is preferred

Name your file as ‘Unit-code-assignment-number-surname’ rather than nonspecific titles.

3. The submission must be in PDF. Your grade is not proportional to the number of pages you
submit. Clear and concise writing is preferred. Check that the file can be opened using a
standard PDF viewers.

4. While emailing make sure you follow these steps:

- The subject line of the email should state your subject code and title of the subject.

5. No assignment will be accepted after due date.

Q.1: The schematics of a plug flow reactor are shown in fig.1. Solve for the concentration

distribution in a plug flow reactor governed by the following equations using MATLAB.

Figure 1: Schematics of a plug flow reactor

Q. 2: Methanol is formed by reacting carbon monoxide with hydrogen. (This might be an on-

board generation of hydrogen for the hydrogen economy.) With the reaction

the condition at equilibrium is

When the carbon monoxide and hydrogen enter the reactor in a 1 : 2 ratio, find the equilibrium

conversion when the pressure is 50 atm and Kp = 0.0016. First, use Excel; then use MATLAB

to solve the problem.

Q. 3: Solve for the concentration distribution in a plug flow reactor with the following reaction

rate expression and parameters using MATLAB.

Q.4: The schematics of a CSTR are shown fig 2.

Figure 2: Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor

The working of CSTR is governed by the following equation

Q(c − cin) = −VR(c)
