Task M1: Design of Purlin

Part 1: Essay
1. Answer the following questions technically.
2. Avoid copying from the internet. Use your own words

Problem 1: Discuss the bending and shear stress theory for purlin.

Bending stress and shearing stress theory for purlin a calculating moment both
on x-axis and y-axis to determine the bending and shear safe or not.

Problem 2: What is Duchemins Formula? Discuss its concept.

An expression for normal wind pressure per square foot on an inclined surface, N
= F [(2sin a)/(1 + sin2 a)], where F = normal wind force in pounds per square foot
on a vertical surface, and a = angle of inclination of inclined surface.

Problem 3: Discuss the wind pressure consideration in the design of purlin.

Designers and specifiers are advised to use a recognised code of practice and
wind pressure consideration in the design of purlin using wind load standards
and codes govern design of buildings and structures to resist wind induced
loads. Wind pressure perpendicular to vertical surface and to normal surface.
Part 2: Problem Solving
1. Show complete solution.
2. Summarize your answers.
3. Upload solution in pdf format.

Problem 1. Assuming that the roof frame of your house is composed of timber
elements. Design a purlin base on the existing parameters. Assume all values not
related to the configuration of your house roof frame.
Problem 2. Submit three solve problems in the design of purlins. Note that each
problem should be unique. Collaborate with your classmates for the uniqueness of your
problem. Any problem which is the same with others will be marked zero.
