ASSIGNMENT-3 (KOM)

Friction
Submission Due Date: 21-04-2022 M.Marks : 25
Instructions to candidates:
1-Write your solution in your own hand writing on plains papers. Also Write Your Roll No. on the top of each

page of your solution scan it and upload the pdf in KOM classroom with in due date.
2- Name the pdf as Your roll no_Assignment. e.g. 19BME010_3.

1 –Define the following: friction, limiting force of friction, coefficient of friction, angle of friction and angle of
repose.
2- A body of weight W is placed on a rough inclined plane having inclination α to the horizontal. The force P is
applied horizontally to drag the body. If the body is on the point of motion up the plane, prove that P is given by:
P = W tan (α + φ ), where φ = Angle of friction.
3- Outside diameter of a square threaded spindle of a screw jack is 40 mm. The screw pitch is 10 mm. If the
coefficient of friction between the screw and the nut is 0.15, neglecting friction between the nut and the collar,
determine: Force required to be applied at the end of tommy bar 1 m in length to raise a load of 20 kN and
Efficiency of the screw.
4- A thrust shaft of a ship has six collars of 600 mm external diameter and 300 mm internal diameter. The total
thrust from the propeller is 120kN. If the coefficient of friction is 0.15 and the speed of engine is 100 rpm, find the
power lost in friction at the thrust block, assuming (i) uniform pressure and (ii) uniform wear theory.
5- A shaft running at 200 rpm drives another shaft at 400 rpm, and transmits 7.5kW through an open belt. The belt
is 80 mm wide and 10 mm thick. The centre distance is 4 m. the smaller pulley is of 500 mm diameter and
coefficient of friction between belt and pulley is 0.3. calculate the stress in the belt.
