Rules and regulations of working with the
BBC.
I will be producing my animation for BBC 4 who have
commissioned 13 animations to be produced with a
budget of between £2,000 to £10,000. The competition
will allow a range of animations styles such as hand
drawn, computer animated and stop motion, the genres
are also quite diverse and can range from documentaries
to Science fiction. Each film needs to be between 2-10
minutes long and because it will be shown on BBC 4 it
will have to suitable to be show before watershed, this
means it must not have sexual content, a lot of violence
and gore, swearing and distressing imagery.
Awards and recognition
There is no prize money for this however it gives
animators a good opportunity to get their work seen by
industry professionals and maybe land an animating job
as part of the BBC or another 3rd party company. During
the animating phase each contestant gets guidance from
Helen Brunsdon who is an important person in the UK
animation field, gaining her respect and knowledge can
help greatly in getting new work after the competition.
 Idea
My final idea is a stop motion comedy that replicates the style of Robot chicken and
Futurama. The film will be around 4-6 minutes long and will feature a main cast of
American astronauts (2 in particular as the 3rd character is in the Command
module). It starts of the astronauts on a fake lunar landing set complaining to the
director that they would like to shoot on location and that the set isn't realistic
enough for the amount of money they are being paid. Eventually the director gives
up and agrees to send them to the moon so they can film in realistically. After a
climatic landing sequence, they realise that the Russians are already there waiting
for them. There will be a couple more mini sketches after this making the film about
5 minutes long. By the end of it the Americans and Russians have both destroyed
each other, at the end the Chinese land in a massive ship and either start mining or
turn the moon into the death star.
Due to the nature of comedy, there may be individuals who may get offended by my
production especially because the space race (one of the core elements of my film)
was a political race used to prove which political system was better. This topic may
offend some viewers as this political undertone is inescapable. To try and reduce
this I will treat the space race more like 2 rival sides of the playground with each one
bullying and sabotaging the other one.
