PRESENCE AND ABSENCE

Talking about the presence, the absence, the number, the amount of things:

What's in the fridge?

There is milk in the fridge.

There is some butter in the fridge.

There are also some carrots.

There is nothing/there isn't anything on the table.

Is there any salad?

There's somebody at the door.

How many chairs are there in the room?

There is/there are:

There is/there are are used to say that something exists.

- Is there a stereo in your room?


- Yes, there is.

Are there people in the street?

Some, any, no and compounds with -one, -body, -thing, and -where:

Some, any and no are quantifiers i.e. they are used to express quantities which are not specified.

We use some in positive statements:

There is some water in the bottle.

In questions and negative statements, we use any:

Are there any people in that room? No, there aren't any.

We can replace not any with no:

There is no water (= there isn't any water) in the bottle.

Some, any and no are sometimes combined with -one, -body, -thing or -where to form compounds:

Is there anything? There is something/nothing.
