OBJECTIVE: To determine reaction conversion and specific rate constant using a tubular
reactor under steady state conditions.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED: Reactor service unit, tubular reactor

TEHORY :

The rate expression can be shown to be ra = k.a.b

Where if aµ is equal to bµ this simplies to ra = k. a2

In general case, the order of the reaction is not known and is shown by

ra = k . an

Ther reaction :

NaOH + CH3COOC2H5 → CH3COONa + C2H5OH

Can be considered equi-molar and first order with respect to both sodium hydroxide and ethyl
acetate i.e. second order overall, within the limits of concentration (0.1 M) and temperature ( 20-
40 oC) studied.

The reaction carried out in a continuous stirred tank reactor or Tubular reactor eventually reaches
steady state when a certain amount of conversion of starting reagents has taken place. The
steady-state conditions will vary depending on the concentration of reagents, flow rate, volume
of reactor and temperature of reaction

PROCEDURE :

1. Make 3.0 L batches of 0.1 M sodium hydroxide and 0.1 M ethyl acetate.
2. Adjust the set point temperature controller to 30 0C.
3. Use the calibration graph for each pumps, set the pump speed control to give 50 ml/min
flow rate for each reactant.
4. Set hot water circulator.
5. Collection of date will be until a steady state condition reached in the reactor.

OBSERVATION AND CALCULATION:

Volumetric feed rate of NaOH, Fa = 50 ml/min = 0.00083 dm3/s

Volumetric feed rate of CH3COOC2H5= 50 ml/min = ------ dm3/s

NaOH concentration in feed vessel, aμ = 0.1 M= mol/dm3

CH3COOC2H5 concentration in feed vessel bμ =0.1M = mol/dm3

Temperature of reactor = 30 0C

Volume of reactor V= 0.41 L
