OBJECTIVE: 1. Study the relationship between reactor volume V and conversion X a for a
reaction taking place in continuous stirred tank reactor.

2. Calculate the reaction rate constant k and draw a curve of V vs Xa.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED: Continuous stirred tank reactor, Reactor service unit

TEHORY:

The reaction:

NaOH + CH3COOC2H5 → CH3COONa + C2H5OH

Can be considered equi-molar and first order with respect to both sodium hydroxide and ethyl
acetate i.e. second order overall, within the limits of concentration (0.1 M) and temperature ( 20-
40 oC) studied.

The reaction carried out in a continuous stirred tank reactor or Tubular reactor eventually reaches
steady state when a certain amount of conversion of starting reagents has taken place. The
steady-state conditions will vary depending on the concentration of reagents, flow rate, volume
of reactor and temperature of reaction

SETUP DIAGRAM
CHE 322 Chemical Reaction Engineering Laboratory

PROCEDURE:

1. Make up to 3.0 L batches of 0.1 M NaOH (4 gm of NaOH/1L) and 0.1 M ethyl acetate (9.79
ml/L of solution)

2. Set the agitator speed controller to “7.0”.

3. Using calibration graph for each pump and set pump speed control to 50 ml/min.

4. Set, set point temperature of 35 0C

5. Repeat above steps for different reactor volume V.

OBSERVATION AND CALCULATION:

Volumtric feed rate of NaOH, Fa = 40 ml/min = dm3/sec =0.00066dm^3/s

Volumetric feed rate of CH3COOC2H5, Fb = 40 ml/min = dm3/sec =0.00066dm^3/s

NaOH concentration in feed vessel aµ = 0.1 mol/dm3
