Dear Cantus Members/Selection Committee:

My name is Colt Lien and I am interested in singing with Cantus as a Baritone Vocalist. I have been
following Cantus and admiring their music for years. Now that I have been made aware of the baritone
opening, I am fiercely passionate about creating top quality music with other dedicated musicians that
share the vision of delivering high art to deserving students and communities around the country.

While there are certainly many individuals with beautiful voices out there, I believe there are very few
that would bring the qualifications that I have spent many years developing and adding to my skills as a
vocalist. Not only do I have the experience of singing with and directing a number of chamber ensembles
for many years, I have also advanced my vocal background to include many various styles of music.
These include renaissance, baroque, art song, aria, opera, folk song, spiritual, vocal jazz, musical theater,
pop music, and both traditional and contemporary choral music, spanning many composers from Bach
and Palestrina to Jocelyn Hagen, Tim Takach, Jake Runestad, and so many inbetween.

While I find my experience at Concordia College in Moorhead to be incredibly central to my

development as a very well rounded vocalist, it is also important to understand that Cantus is not simply
about performing music at a high level. From an outsider perspective, it also seems to be about providing
beauty to the world around us. The work of Cantus as educators to the many curious musicians and
students in our nation only solidifies in my mind that this ensemble is exactly where I am meant to be. It
feeds my soul as a musical servant to those around me and as an educator to those who deserve to know
the deep complexities of all that music is.
