I. SYNTHESIZE
Bioethicist Daniel Callahan asked, when talking
about the potential for doubled lifespans,” ’What
will we get as a society?’ I suspect it won’t be a
better society.” On a separate piece of paper, write
a paragraph about whether you agree or disagree
with his statement. Support your answer with at
least three pieces of information from Step I.

MY PARAGRAPH:
Daniel Callahan said “’What will we get as a
society?’ I suspect it won’t be a better society.” I
utterly disagree with Daniel Callahan for many
reasons and I strongly believe that doubled
lifespans could change the society in a positive
way.

First, we will be able to find our “perfect” husband.

It doesn’t mean that we won´t have problems in
our relationships, but we will have enough time to
kmow a person that have our similar ideas and
goals, therefore, we will have a better marriage
with all of our experiences that we could have had.

Second, we will have enough time to find the

career that we really like and enjoy, so we will
work with passion. Also we will be able to
specialize in any subject so we will be better
professionals with more experiences.
Finally, our family will be bigger and we will be
able to transmit our knowledge to our family. We
will know our grandchildren and we could give
them advices based on our experiences.

II. CREATE

IV. PROJECT
In this unit, you have read a science fiction story
about people living longer lives. Even today, there
are areas of the world as well as specific groups of
people who are already living lives that are
significantly longer than average. Areas where
these people live are called “blue zones.” There
are a number of reasons why people in this
longevity hotspots seem to live longer than most
people.

In a small group, research of these areas.

Compare your findings and write a report. Follow
these steps:

STEP 1: Loma Linda, California, USA

STEP 2: Do research on the internet about the

blue zone you chose. Read two or more articles
describing the area or group you are studying.
Answer the questions.

 How long do the people live?

People tend to live eight to ten years longer than
the average American. The average age is 90.

 Where do they live and what is their

environment like?
They live in Loma Linda, California, USA. It is
located between mountain peaks in the middle of
the San Bernardino Valley. The environment is
clean because it is prohibited to smoke and people
have healthy habits.

 What is their diet?

Many of them are vegetarians. They eat mostly
fruits, vegetables and legumes with a proportion of
27% of fruits, 33% of vegetables and 12 % of
legumes and soy.

 What is their lifestyle?

They do exercise, avoid smoking or drinking
alcohol, eat meat in moderation, eat early light
dinner, drink plenty of water, spend time with like-
minded friends and help others.

 What do they do that is different from what

most people do?
They don’t allow people to smoke in public places.

 How do experts explain their longevity?

Experts say that's because Loma Linda has one of
the highest concentrations of Seventh-day
Adventists in the world. The religion mandates a
healthy lifestyle and a life of service to the church
and community, which contributes to their
longevity.
 What can we learn from this people?
We can learn that with a healthy lifestyle and
having more emotional wellness we can reduce
the risk of having any disease, therefore, we can
increase our life expectancy.

STEP 3: Work in your small group to compare

your findings and prepare a report for the class.

Loma Linda: a blue zone

People in Loma Linda tend to live eight to ten

years longer than the average American. The
average age is 90. There are many reasons why
they live so longer.
Loma Linda is located in California between
mountain peaks in the middle of the San
Bernardino Valley. The environment is clean
because it is prohibited to smoke and people have
healthy habits. Many of them are vegetarians.
They eat mostly fruits, vegetables and legumes
with a proportion of 27% of fruits, 33% of
