EE 435AL 3rd Exam 2/26/2021

Instructions:

1. Write your solutions on the yellow papers.

3. Once the examination has started, you are not allowed to leave your area.
4. Once finished, put your exam here in image form.
6. Correct answers with wrong solutions will be given a negative score.
Problem Solving:
1). A 75-hp, 600-volt, 1000-rpm, three-phase Y-connected synchronous motor has an armature
resistance of 0.05 ohm per phase and leakage reactance of 0.45 ohm per phase. The efficiency at
rated load, 80% pf leading, is 92%. Determine the induced emf per phase.

2). It is desired to purchase a synchronous condenser to correct the 2,400-kVA 0.67-lagging power
factor load in an industrial plant to 0.95 lagging. Neglect losses, calculate: (a) the kilovolt-ampere
input rating of the required synchronous condenser; (b) the total kilovolt-amperes of the plant.

3). A dc shunt motor runs at a speed of 1000 r.p.m. on no-load, taking a current of 6 A from the
supply when connected to 220 V dc supply. Its full load current is 50 A. Calculate its speed on full
load. Assume Ra = 0.3 ohm and Rsh = 110 ohms.

4). The power input to a 30-hp 220-volt shunt motor is 2,100 watts, taken at no load. The field and
armature resistances are 73 and 0.11 ohms, respectively. Calculate the efficiency and horsepower
output for an input current of 100 amp.

5). A 240-volt series motor has an armature resistance of 0.42 ohm and a series-field resistance of
0.18 ohm. If the speed is 500 rpm when the current is 36 A, what will be the motor speed when the
load reduces the line current to 21 A? (Assume a 3-volt brush drop and that of the flux is
proportional to the current.).
