1. A 3-phase synchronous motor takes 52.5 A at a power factor of 0.80 leading from a 400-volt
line. If its synchronous impedance is (0.25 + j3.2) ohms per phase, determine the emf induced
between lines.

2. A 1000 kVA, 11-kV, 3-phase Y-connected synchronous motor has a synchronous impedance of
(3.5+j40) ohms per phase. Determine the emf between lines when the motor is fully loaded at
0.80 lagging power factor.

3. The output of a single-phase 500-V synchronous motor is 20 HP and the p.f. is 0.8 lagging.
Effective armature resistance is 1.0 ohm. Iron and friction losses amount to 0.50 kW and the
excitation losses 0.50 kW. Determine the overall efficiency of the motor.

4. A single phase 440-V synchronous motor is taking 50A at 0.90 lagging power factor. Effective
armature resistance = 0.80 ohm. If the iron and friction losses amount to 600 watts, what is the
overall efficiency if excitation losses are 800 watts?

5. The output of a 200-volt single phase synchronous motor takin ga current of 20 A is 4 Hp.
Effective armature resistance is 0.50 ohm. Iron and friction loss amount to 400 W. What is the
power factor?

6. A 500 V single-phase synchronous motor is taking 50 A at 0.80 leading. The output is 25 HP.
Effective resistance of armature, 0.25 ohm. Determine the iron and friction loss.

8. A factory takes 200 kW at 1100 volts from a three-phase source and the power factor is 0.707
lagging. A synchronous motor is installed which takes an additional 100 kW. What must be the
kVA rating of this motor to raise the power factor of the system to 0.90 lagging?

9. A 3-phase, 6600-V, 6000-HP, y-connected synchronous motor is to be operated under rated


conditions with full load and a leading power factor of 0.50. The rotational losses under these
conditions are 130 kW and may be taken as constant. The effective resistance and synchronous
reactance per phase are 0.085 and 2.90 ohms, respectively. What is the current drawn by this
machine and the excitation voltage under this condition?

10. An industrial plant draws 500 kW at 0.60 p.f. from a 3-phase system. In order to raise the power
factor to 0.866 lagging and to supply needed additional power, a synchronous motor is added.
This motor draws 300 kW. Neglecting the losses of the motor, calculate the exact required kVA
rating.

8942 volts. Determine the line current and power factor.

the exciting current is so adjusted that the ind1 emf is 500 volts. At what power factor would the
motor operate, if synchronous reactance is 4 ohms.

watts, find the armature current.

31. A substation operating at full-load of 1200 kVA supplies a load at 0.7 power factor lagging.
Calculate the permissible additional load at this power factor and the rating of synchronous
condenser to raise the substation power factor to 0.9 lagging.
